I have a Torq .21 in a Thunder Quake that is running too hot. I have tried everything I and other club members have proposed. So I am fishing for ideas.

I ran it through 6-7 tanks of 15% nitro in a recommended break-in over a couple weeks time. It seemed to run hot, but not over heating. Then one weekend it semed to get really hot, to the point it would shut down. I installed a temp gauge and it read 300+, even after richening it to the point of bogging down. So I dismantled the engine. But I found nothing really wrong, other then discoloration from the over heating. I did smooth out the pull start pin groove, but saw nothing else as an issue.

I am trying running it pretty rich with 10% Traxxas fuel to see if that would help.
On pavement with the body off it will get to 190+ under moderate driving. And when run in the grass for a few moments heats up to 245+ in a short time. I expect that it would again hit close to 300 under racing conditions.

Any ideas before I go for a new Piston and Sleeve?

gniessen,

How do you have your ventilation set up?

The only control over ventilation is how low you mount the body. I have mine mounted high enough that it should not be having a significant effect on cooling.

What other ventilation might you be talking about?

gniessen,

I run a RC10 FT GT, and everybody who runs this class of truck cuts 1/2 of the windshield off for better cooling, as well as the driver's window. I have a feeling that you might not want to do this, but for racing, you may not have a choice.

I do not know how much oil your fuel has, but more should help to cool it down a bit. Also, you should richen the mixture up, as this will also help to cool it.

I have a few ideas. First of all don't go out and buy a piston and sleeve because that won't help. It could be the traxxas fuel you are running. Traxxas fuel is designed for traxxas engines because traxxas engines will run way hotter than every other type and needs different additives to make the fuel burn at a hotter temp. Try something like red alert 20%. I know that when I got my new nitro star ss I put a tuned pipe on it and that made it run so hot that fuel boiled out of the carb. I tryed lengthening the coupler and that helped cool it down alot and even gave it more performance and more consistant runs. You also might have an air leak somewhere. Make sure that the head is totaly clean. Hope this helps

I have checked everything and am pretty sure there is no leak. But I was running it this afternoon and got an idea of what might be the problem. The exhaust extender. I had added an exhaust extender to keep the oil from the fuel from covering the left rear tire. It was causing the truck to spin out under hard acceleration and braking. But the extra resistance does seem to have an effect on the engine. I removed it and the temperature came down.

Actually the Traxxas fuel seems to help it run cooler. All things the same, it made the engine about 20 degrees cooler. removing the extender maybe another 20 degrees. Still runs hot. But not too bad. I'll try it at the track later this week and see if the temps hold up under some hard driving.

I have been breaking in my Axis this weekend. It seems to run cooler. But then it is a much smaller, lighter vehicle and the gearing is different. My problem with it is that it is very rich on the low end, but is coming around nice on the top end. I even turned in the low end until it was flush and it still burbles richly. But it doesn't stall or hesitate, so I wont complain.

The Axis is a much different ride.
