This used to be a P70 (Before it decided it wanted to be friends with the ground)
I am just wondering if anyone thinks if it'd be cheaper to bite the bullet and get a new one rather than send this in for repair?

If anyone is wondering, the largest piece of aircraft left was the rudder/elevator assembly of my Reaction 54.

First I am sorry to hear about your crash. I have an R54 kit I hope to one day build myself (with a P-70 waiting on it!), it was a nice plane you lost.

Well your ECU is gone, that is for sure. The turbine is hard to tell from that picture, but to me (a lowly online helper) it seems well worth a UPS ground shipment to find out. Your compressor does not look too bad, and generally the very nasty crashes really destroy the compressor.

Anyway I would definitely send it in and hope you have some good karma left after your crash.

Chin up, good luck.

Thanks Matt, I'll do that. Should I call and let them know I'm going to send it in?

The R54 was an excelent aircraft. Not 100% sure what happened but I was about 20ft off the ground when it just started a gracefull arc down. I think I lost radio signal. Problem is at 180 mph and 20ft vertical drop, I don't think the failsafe had time to operate or if it did, it was right when it hit.

If you look at the pictures below, you'll see that it hit about an inch off dead center of the front tire of the land owners truck. No damage what so ever to the truck, but the balsa bits and covering and bits of electronics were strewn under the truck and about 10 ft out the other side! I don't know about you, but I don't think my repair skills would be good enough to repait this pile of balsa and ply!!!

It has seen beter days

Thanks again for your help. It is very much appreciated!!
George

I forgot to mention, I can spin the impellor blades and they spin free enough, no wobble or noise from the bearings!
I also found the starter motor. It still has the thing that engages the turbine, but the shaft is bent and no plastic case to be found.

We were lucky there was no fire to. There was Jet Fuel all over the ground and the ECU and RX batteries were busy sitting in that ring shorting out and fizzing etc.
Also, you can see Wood Fuzzies sticking out from between the rim and tire. They were almost impossible to dig outta there.

It isn't as bad as it may seem though. We fly off of a Crop Dusters field who has set asside a little space for us. Off one end of the runway (About 100-200 ft away he has this truck sitting there attached to a roller he uses to flatten his runways) so this little incident was well away from everyone and almost everything.

Put it all in a bag, wait a few days and go back to it. It's never as bad as it first looks

George very sorry about your loss, perhaps I should have used more Hysol when I built it! Hey it was a great plane for me and I'm glad to see that you enjoyed it as well. Build another one or make the step up! Regards, Jim
