for my spad I need a new firewall. I'm making one out of wood. What should I cover the wood with to prevent fuel soaking?

Thanks, dave trimmer

The best stuff to fuel-proof the wood is an epoxy resin specifically made to use as a "paint". You will find many people who suggest thinning regular epoxy with alcohol or other solvents, but I have never found that satisfactory. You used to be able to get epoxy resin at Home Depot, but I haven't seen it lately. I've heard that polyester resin (used to soak fiberglass for boats and similar) is fuel proof as well (and you can get it at Home Depot) but I haven't tried it myself. TopFlite makes an aerosol paint that is fuel proof.

The problem with any of these methods is that you have to buy a whole lot more paint than you need, so it's expensive. For the same cost of the paint, you could buy a polyethylene cutting board that will make dozens of firewalls and not need to be fuel proofed.

Just mix 30 minute epoxy and thin it with either alcohol or acetone. If you use alcohol try to use 91% to keep the water down. You can use acetone as well if you have it and who doesn't?

There's is really no need to guild the lily, if you have the resin, use it. I've never had it, so I've never used anything but the epoxy, and I've used a whole bunch of it.

Of course, if you can get down to Walmart and pickup a cutting board, your fuelproofing problems will be over.

15 to 30 min epoxy is fine. Thin if you wish, however if you spread some out and then use your heat-gun on the epoxy, it will go Gin-Thin and run well plus soak right into the wood. Brush it around as you wish and you will get a very long lasting firewall.

I have a Spad "40" with a ST 61 ABC that I kamikazed a Pylon Pole with just yesterday. Broke some points in the fuse. (all fixed now) and wrinkled one side of the wing. Firewall is still good to go, and so is the plane. No big dents so should be ready to go finish off that P.Pole on Wed.

I usually don't fly my spads more than about 20 flights before I'm ready to build another one. Therefore I don't even worry about fuel proofing my firewall. Cleans suggestion of the HDPE cutting board is the best way to go. I think if you cut it right you can get about 10 to 12 firewalls.

One small bottle of black Dope and some acid brushes will do dozens of firewalls and wing rubber band dowels.
