I know this is an ancient thread but I was sure glad someone resurrected it 9 months ago. It inspired me to outfit my SIG Mid-Star in Old Glory. Maybe this bump will inspire someone else to experiment with covering and create something not likely duplicated at your local flying site.

Anyway, this was my first attempt at the "windex" method. Overall I am pleased. I got a bit impatient towards the end of striping and got some bubbles on the ailerons ... I think I can get them to settle down with a little coaxing . Regardless, I can't wait to see this in the air. Termagator, I THANK YOU for sharing this technique.

I don't have it done yet. I was planning on doing one, but just haven't found time yet to get one made. Sorry.

Ken did you have a post that was showing how you did the flag. Seems like I remember you saying that you cut the blue to small but you would just add a piece. Maybe I am thinking of someone else. When you get older the first thing that goes is the Mind.

I may have said that at one point somewhere here on RCU. But for the life of me I don't remember where.

Isn't that at the beginning of this thread???

Holy Smokes Snarlacles, that is one awesome job! You went above and beyond!

Here's a couple of pictures of my 3D HobbyShop.com Extra 300SHP.

Thanks to TERMAGATOR for the great idea!

I have a really nice Taylorcraft with the Starburst design scheme on it. I have noticed some wrinkles in areas where there is Monokote over Monokote . How would I get those out with two layers of covering on top of each other?

Tireman I am having the same trouble with wrinkles/air bubbles....the grey stripes went down perfect...the blue stars field I can't get the imperfections out for anything.....anyone who has used monokote over monokote chime in if you can....are bubbles/imperfections inevitable?

My suggestion is make sure you use lots of Windex. Don't substitute the original formula windex for anything else. I use a soft piece of 3/16 balsa about the size of a credit card to squgee the windex out. You may end up with bubbles, but a sharp pin and a trim iron on low heat combined with a lot of patience can usually take care of them.

Actually, there are black over white monokote with a few "ripples" in some areas. The covering was already done when I got the plane. Any remedy for that?

heres what I did on the star field. You are right, this area is difficult to lay flat because of all the holes that the stars are cut out of.

If you have a wrinkle in the star field, squeegy out the wrinkle as best you can, but then take a brand new super sharp #11 blade and take out the wrinkle for the side. that stuff will then just lay over itself , may even give you small areas of a "Depth effect"

I borrowed one of the pics from the start of this thread to illustrate what I mean. hope this will help ya

I went ahead and just laid down a solid field of blue...have eliminated almost all of the imperfections except for a few small bubbles....let windex dry overnight before using the iron on low heat......then I manually cut out the stars...they went down very easy and it looks great......I lose some of the grey showing through the cut out blue.....but the way the stars were cut, as done in the tutorial, gives the blue field of stars plenty of depth......I am very satisfied...now if I could just learn how to post a picture I would display...
