oops.... I was wrong. Sorry. I didn't read the questions right. I thought he ment Monokote over Ultracote. Ultracote will not accept the windex or soapy water method. Actually I use just water with a couple of drops of dish soap in a spray bottle.
It doesn't matter if it is windex or not. The windex doesn't do anything. It is just used to be able to slide the monokote around on the surface. Therefore the water & soap will work as well. I even use this method to apply all my decals. No more bubbles on large decals.

Status: offline 		Salmonbug. you can also use soapy water...I use't to take liquid dishwashing detergent, and a large bowl of water, stir in the detergent so as not to make bubbles, stick you finger in the water after you stir in the saop, rub you finger together...if the water feels oily then your ready...works same way, peel backing, put the entire peice in the covering, then place it on your surface, and squeegy out the saopy water...let sit overnight and come back when you finish the model and do the Q-Tip in acetone around edges...Good Luck..Gator

Status: offline 		Does anyone know if the Windex method works on the Neon colors of Monokote? I noticed that the Neon colors have a white backing before the adhesive. Does that have any affect?

Status: offline 		Experimenting with several mfrs covering material, windex did allow sliding the trim piece easily, however, it failed to activate the heat sensitive glue and therefore no bonding was achieved; merely a static cling. Using acetone to seal the edges failed, as it disolved the glue and the color and it went so far as to attack the film itself causing it to deform somewhat. Acetone is a very aggressive solvent, so it does not surprise me to see it ruin the film. I wonder what the active ingredient is in the film mfrs liquid glue activator? Any new suggestions?
Thanks for a great thread, and wonderful new ideas for entertaining covering schemes. It has made me want to try some of these tricks. Thanks 'Gator.

Status: offline 		If static cling is all thats holding the covering on, then thats enough. If the acetone is eating the film try the trim solvent, it is kinda expensive and stinks though.....another option to try would take the tip of the iron and go around edges(low temp)....good luck

Status: offline 		The iron definately works, but you have to be sooooo careful to avoid the dreaded "blisters". (air bubbles trapped between the layers of film). I'm gonna try some of the mfrs trim solvent...maybe we can figure out what it is, and save a bunch of money using the generic product. Let me know if you have any luck in telling what its made of.
On a related subject, I have some non heat shring film, made by 3M, for signs, boat graphics, etc. Its a nice metalic film, and it is actually reflective like a stop sign, and its cool to see it change its shade of color as the light hits it at odd angles. I'm going to try it for trim strips, but since it is metalic, the warning is that if you covered the entire plane with it, you'd have to lead the antenna out of the fuse, because the metalic would act as a shield ,and reduce the range. But it looks soooo cool.

Status: offline 		Thanks a lot Gator for all the info on the flag and the shadow in particular. I was looking to learn about that for a while and your posts have convinced me to try it. I got the grey and the transparent color this afternoon and did the flag tonight.
I choose an easy one first to try under the wing of my back up Cap 232 25%. The next one will be the Canadian flag on my pattern plane.

Status: offline 		I hope my friend doesn't mind. But after I seen his plane I had to post a picture of his flag ship. He did one heck of a nice job. Also notice the detail in the tail section. Overall this plane gets a TRIPLE A+. I also know this guy has only covered a 2 planes. I can't wait to see him fly it. See the next posting for his other covering job. This guy is good!

Thanks thurminator, for the vote of confidence and words of praise. While it is true that I am new to the sport and these were my first 2 attempts at covering on my own , I would sincerely like to thank the 2 individuals that originally derived the schemes that I utilized. Termagator, for this awesome flag scheme and Tom Pierce for the equally awesome 4 star theme. My covering jobs were a challenge to myself to see if I could even come close to their talents and inspiring schemes. While the 4 star was an effort to duplicate, the flag was used as a basic theme for experimenting on the second plane. I certainly would like to also thank "the gang" at the Mad River Flying Club for their encouragement and dedication to the sport. I hope I can contribute to the sport and be as helpful as everyone here at RC Universe certainly is to one another. Thanks all.
