TERMAGATOR -> How to make a 3D American Flag on your planes (3/6/2003 2:57:06 AM)

This is my 4th flag I'v done, all have been done on profiles.....the types of covering in this series are:

White Ultracote for my base/back ground
Grey, transparent red and transparent blue monokote.

I applied the all monokote useing windex...I do use heat around some edges as you will see in these pics....Total time was maybe 6 hrs...I kinda rushed it. alot of these steps work best if you let them sit overnight.......here we go

TERMAGATOR -> drawing the grey stips (3/6/2003 2:59:58 AM)

after you have your model covered white , its time to start laying down the gray monokote. These lines are just random, nothing has to be defined, I like for the 1st few to go from the LE to TE but they dont have to

TERMAGATOR -> more grey (3/6/2003 3:00:49 AM)

heres one layed out on the wing

TERMAGATOR -> windex (3/6/2003 3:02:22 AM)

apply a light coating of windex, and then lay your coveing in the windex and position it where you want

TERMAGATOR -> credit card (3/6/2003 3:03:49 AM)

use an old credit card to squeegie the windex out from under the grey, and wipe up excess Windex with a paper towel

TERMAGATOR -> all the grey (3/6/2003 3:05:33 AM)

Here what it looks like with all the grey(shadow) in place...hey this looks kinda neat by it self

TERMAGATOR -> transparent blue (3/6/2003 3:08:01 AM)

now after you have the grey down, draw the outline of the blue box with the stars. I like to use water soluable flair felt tips for monokote jobs

TERMAGATOR -> transparent blue (3/6/2003 3:10:55 AM)

now lay a peice bigger than the area you drew on the wing over the wing, you can look thru the covering and trace where your blue box will be on the wing.....I screwed up here and didnt cut a peice of monokote big enough so I had to use 2 peices of trans blue, but thats OK...I was running low on trans red too

TERMAGATOR -> extra blue (3/6/2003 3:12:01 AM)

heres the peice of blue that I added,
make sure you cut it where it hangs over the LE and the tip

TERMAGATOR -> blue box (3/6/2003 3:13:18 AM)

Heres the blue box temperarely layed down

TERMAGATOR -> stars (3/6/2003 3:15:46 AM)

this is probably the most difficult process, drawing and cutting out the stars....these stars are not symetrical...there just draw on and I tried to keep them close to the same size...it doenst matter if some are biger or not perfect...remember the flag is suppose to look like its got some depth

TERMAGATOR -> applying the stars (3/6/2003 3:18:39 AM)

after you cut out all the stars, apply Windex to the wing and lay your blue box down, again squeegie the windew out form underneath the blue, be careful some of the tips of the stars may catch the edge of the credit card. make sure you got plenty of blue covering hanging off the LE and wing tips

TERMAGATOR -> red stripes (3/6/2003 3:21:43 AM)

now after that has set a while,(best results overnight), start at the bottom right hand corner of your blue box, and start drawing your red lines. I make my lines break in a different direction when they touch the grey

TERMAGATOR -> red (3/6/2003 3:23:26 AM)

then again ike I did with the blue, take a peice of trans red and lay it over the lines you just drew on the wing and trace those lines to your red covering , then remove and cut it out

TERMAGATOR -> red strips (3/6/2003 3:24:48 AM)

here it is layed in place and cut to fit

TERMAGATOR -> continue red (3/6/2003 3:26:38 AM)

now just continue to draw the red line, remember to change the direction slightly when it touchs the gray

TERMAGATOR -> heat (3/6/2003 3:28:59 AM)

since the ailerons and the gray had some time to sit...I pulled them off and heated the edges with the iron to seal them down

TERMAGATOR -> adding more strips (3/6/2003 3:31:33 AM)

after I sealed the gray on the TE of the wing and the edges of the ailerons....i stuck the ailerons on again and stuck more red on with the same methods used earlier

TERMAGATOR -> red continued (3/6/2003 3:33:14 AM)

I try to make my red stripes carry over on the other side of the fuse or ailerons so it looks like its the same stripe

TERMAGATOR -> red (3/6/2003 3:36:46 AM)

Like I said I was running low on transparent red monokote so I had to peice some of this in, but a little red laying over alittle red makes a nice color change like the grey does to transparent red

TERMAGATOR -> heat around the edges (3/6/2003 3:38:02 AM)

I use heat arond all hard surfaces like LE and TE

TERMAGATOR -> almost complete (3/6/2003 3:42:05 AM)

Heres the final
after I use heat around all hard edges I come back over the open wing areas with some monokote trim solvent applied with a Q-Tip. this seals down all edges that dont have heat

good luck....would love to see other peoples flags.....The 1st time you try this it may seem difficult. but if you take your time and be patient...it will not be as bad.....also i was luck to keep the red stripes outta the hinge line. sometimes it dont alway work out that easy......Gator

nice job termagator! I've got to give this a try on my next build. Wondering about wrinkles that appear - can they be heated and shrunk or how do you do it????

PaulSwany -> How to make a 3D American Flag on your planes (3/6/2003 3:56:08 AM)

Gator... That is soooo cool... I can't wait to do my Aeron with the flag... Maybe I'll do my next taco with the flag....

Ditto - I've got a CG Extra 300 with a white wing so the base is already there just add the flag. The top of the wing is red/orange/yellow starburst. Already pretty flashy.
