As for the Jet rally, I really thought that with 60 to 80 pilots the runway would have been closed to full scale airplanes, I myself, had to abort two flights becaues of full scale.one just after takeoff and the other, taxien back to the pits.
I did approach Lewis in the evening at the hotel lobby about trying to get a 10 minute warning on a full scale landing and he replied with a raised out burst, calling everone STUPID, to think we should suggest to airport management our concerns. He continued to go on and on, calling all the pilots STUPID, at least twelve times he used the Word STUPID.
I think a apology is in order.

Publicly calling people stupid is not ideal - perhaps naive would be a better choice of words in the circumstances.

Maybe things are different in Canada, and maybe you haven't been paying any attention to the numerous posts on here in the past about the attempted runway closures at Superman etc., but the fact is that here in the US you usually can't just close a public airport whenever you feel like it. As the ad naseum discussions from the past have made quite clear, the federal funding that most airports receive means that the airport must remain open for its primary use (which means full scale traffic) and can not be closed whenever the public wants to host a car drag race, RC jet show, or any other such activity. Ocassionaly you can find an airprt htat can be closed, or an airport where you can close one runway but leave the other(s) open, but that's definitely the exception rather than the rule.

As for expecting a 10 minute notification from the full-scale traffic - aint gonna happen. Be thankful if the full scale traffic calls in their intentions AT ALL, because many airports (including one that I frequently fly from) don't even require that any radio call be made at all.

When it comes to using a runway that is designed for full-scale traffic, we have to be incredibly thankful that we get to use it at all, and not get uppity about the full-scale guys not changing their policies to suit us.

Pete,

As far as closing the airport is concerned, its been discussed here before, but according to the FAA, ANY airport that receives federal funds CAN NOT be closed for a non-aviation event. The FAA considers a model jet rally a non-aviation event (their logic, not mine), and I'm sure that airport, as a municipal, county facility, has received federal funds, so it is NOT possible to close it for a jet flyin. In contrast, the new airport where Liberty Jets is being held is completely private, I believe and thus can be closed for the event.

I do believe that the full-scale activity can be handled in a better manner and there MUST be a VHF radio out on the flight line for safety, but the airport being open, in and of itself, is not a reason for me to not come next year.

I also liked the big tent and the spectators didn't bother me too much. I would have liked the food vendors somewhere else, etc., but I'll save those comments for Lewis via an email...

Bob

Shouldn't we allow spectators and up close view of our hobby to drive more interest? I thought that is what keeps hobbies / sports alive. Shouldn't the show be an RC Jet Rally for the spectators? I do think there should be some rules / boundaries around how close but I don't think you can shut spectators off all together. I can't speak for everyone but had I not been a spectator I would not have been exposed to the hobby and probably not gotten involved.

I did not fly anything but I enjoyed being around everyone and seeing the different ways people approach the hobby and how they set up thier planes and support equipment.

And Pete... I did not even take your parking spot

Sorry Dewey,

But it may have been written wrong by Pete, but he did have a point. Yes, we all want to promote and answer questions to all spectators and let them enjoy this hobby with us no question about it. I hope we word our statments better to get our point across better the first time.

THE PARADE THROUGH THE BIG TENT WITH PLANES ON TABLES AND ON THE GROUND WAS SOMETHING TO BE VERY CONCERNED WITH ALL THE TIME. I HAD TO TELL MY WIFE MANY TIMES TO WATCH OUR STUFF BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN ROBBED AT AN EVENT AND I WILL NOT TAKE IT LIGHTLY HAVE SPECTATOR SO CLOSE TO MY EQUIPMENT OR PERSONEL ITEMS, I HAD TO BE ON GUARD ALL THE TIME. IT WAS ALREADY TIGHT, TIGHT WITH JUST THE PILOTS BEING IN THERE. THERE HAS TO BE A WAY TO WORK THIS OUT SO WE CAN ANSWER QUESTIONS AND ALSO PROTECT OUR INVESTMENTS.

With the heat you just wanted to find some place to cool off but the parade came in to get out of the heat with you. I tell you the parents were not watching out for how their childern were moving about. Nothing bad happened I hope but you still had to be on guard with your eyes opened not closed sleeping unless someone else was watching for you.

Still I found time the enjoy the hell out of this event meeting new pilots and just doing my thing which made me happy.

As a spectator I thought the event went very well.

I don't fly jets but I do fly rc planes with the little spiny things on front. I was born and raised in Lebanon (Marion Co) and soloed from this same runway, it's kinda like sacred ground to me and I love seeing such a great event take place in my home town.

As for Lewis, I think he did a great job, he worked his tail off to make it fun as possiable for everyone and I can't wait for next year. I just wish a sack of money would fall out of the sky so I can have a jet too!

It was not all spectator children you had to watch out for, some of the pilots kids were running around and tossing things in the air among the aircraft tables.......Kids will be kids, ya gotta love 'em..............

This is what KY jets was all about - free, open flying - and all the rest is just bulls**t.
We had a GREAT time and there was no way anyone can say they didn't get enough flying time. Louis is a gentleman and is being too apologetic. There's nothing to apologize for Louis, it was a great weekend!
