I asked earlier, what are the benefits of NiMH over NiCads for the transmitter? So far I don't see a reason that makes them the better choice, especially when I'm seeing the failure rate I am for them. I don't have an interest in having ten chargers or real expensive chargers with thick manuals written by people who can't speak English, that I have to read to charge my transmitter batteries. Transmitter batteries have a very simple-easy job, they supply power for the transmitter. They are not exposed to vibration, High G loads or high heat and are given a very smooth ride.

I'n not a battery Guru, nor am I an idiot. I've been around this hobby a long time and the old reliable Nicads simply didn't crap out like I see NiMH batteries doing. Obviously there has to be a reason the industry seems to be going to NiMH batteries

Failure to hold or take a full charge. If this is the failure of a single cell, cell to cell contact failure, weld failure or some other cause, I couldn't say. Like most all of us, I don't disassemble a pack and do a post-mortum on the pack to determine the reason for the failure, I simply replace the pack with a new pack. If NiMH packs must be formated or exposed to some other process as suggested, then why are R/C sets only provided with a simple wall charger?

The Tx pack in a Multiplex is a 7.2 volt pack. I've had no trouble at all with mine and it holds a charge for quite a while before charging. I hear reports of guys getting 6-8 hours of flying time and still having charge left.

I really dont see what you see as a problem, only 14 people reported a problem compared to the thousands in use out there
Transmitter packs are small cells and dont like to be fast charged at 1C, also folks who suddenly buy a 1500ma + for their transmitter sometimes dont realize that their 50ma wal wart is not going to do the job anymore and are not flying fully charged packs.
Rcpilet is advising that you cycle them to equalise all the cells (form charging) and give you true capacitiy, same for any large cell count pack be it Nimh or Nicad or lipos.
Nicads are going away because of the chemical disposal problems associated with their chemistry.
The simple wal charger will work it just needs to be able to output enough juice to get the job done.

I'm only interested in assembling information on HiMH failures. In our club the failure rate is pretty much the same as what the percentages are here! This is an unacceptably high failure rate (in my opinion). In the 70s and 80s, I did not see failures for Tx NiCads and as a matter of fact, I can't recall a single failure of Tx NiCads for myself or the people whom I immediatly flew with.

This is not one of the more visited topics on R/CU. However, It is the only place to make comment or post a poll on the topic, I'm sure If I had posted at another more popular topic thread, there would have been more traffic; but, the moderators would have moved the thread here, anyways. So although the response here is pretty limited, as I have stated, it agrees with the percentages I see in my own small club, so I feel it has merrit.

No true recognized experts have come here to give their opinons, which is to bad.

Thanks for your comments!

Ive had a Hydrimax 1650 pack in my TX for 4 years and its still as good as the day I got it...I keep trying to talk myself into replacing it but why? It cycles as good as the first day! Ive been using nimh packs for years and have NEVER had a failure..But then again I don't get Ebay specials but rather have bought quality packs from Radical RC and Hangtime Hobbies...If so many of you club members are having issues than its either they are buying cheap packs to start with or they are not charging them correctly...

Why does it have to be that the members of my club are doing something wrong? If NiMH take special handling, why aren't the manufacturers including chargers capible of providing this special handling and instructions for doing so?

You are making assertions we could not possibly be as sophisticated as you are and we only buy cheap batteries off of Ebay. Let me assure you, you are far from the truth!

Thats just the thing..there really ISNT anything special about them...they can be charged at c/10 over night just like a nicad..they can be fast charged like a nicad...They can be cycled like a nicad...The ONLY difference I know of is that they should be cycled a few times and charged at c/10 before quick charging them...Actually you should do that with nicads as well but Im not a battery expert...

Didn't mean to imply Im better than anyone but something isn't adding up...

I started this poll-thread in the interest of bringing light to a problem I am seeing. Take from it what you will or leave it be. Whatever, it is your choice. I've seen enough and with the experience I've had over the many years I've been involved in this hobby, I'm going back to NiCads. I'm sure you who will use NiMH, will have good luck with them.

When I could get all the batteries I wanted from where I worked where we made both, I stayed with Ni-Cd for my transmitter and receivers. Ni-Mh just doesn't have the long term performance and life that Ni-Cds have. They have gotten better, but they still are inferior to Ni-Cd technology.

Ni-Mh capacity gradually degrades with use, while Ni-Cd stays fairly constant until they finally give up (short or dry out from venting). You may think you are flying with 1800 mAh when it is actually 600 mAh.

No need to as long as you understand them and keep an eye on performance.
