Volkert,

Good to hear that you are all moved in and have your work area set up. Looks good to me! Hope that you had a nice Christmas and keep us informed of your progress with your FG AJ build.

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (12/26/2007 1:13:53 AM)

Tony,

Hope that your Christmas was Merry! I had a feeling about the elevator "Stiffy" and you confirmed it. Now, for sure, I plan to follow your lead and go with the single elevator servo exactly where it is suggested in the instructions. I have been pleased with the pull/pull rudder system, but it is tempting to consider your mention of putting a single servo back in the fuselage, on the other side of the elevator servo, to control the rudder. It would take a little tail wheel mod, but what the heck. Hey, the Katana MD wing tube is an excellent substitution for the supplied one. It is strong and tough, to say the least. Again, another "Taildragger726" upgrade modification that works. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh...........Yeahhhhhhhhh!!!!

Taildragger726 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (12/26/2007 3:09:09 AM)

Pappajeff, Christmas was great here. Our nine year old was a joy to watch!

I can not take credit for the Katana wing tube mod,,, I am just relaying the info.

I let a couple guys fly my 4 cell AJX last week. One is a very capable war bird driver. The other was so so on the experience level. They both loved the airplane and did well with it, including landings.

Hey check out Flitons new FG AJ 330S video !

Very cool (if i do say so myself)

HR

Well, it looks as if the FJ version of the Fliton AJ Extra 300S has influenced the new AJ video. So now the new video of the FG AJ Extra
is titled; "BUNS OF STEEL"
I thought that we were supposed to concentrate on the flying characteristics of the AJ, right?????

PappaJeff, what flying characteristics......????? [;)]

With a 3s1p pack on the A30-10XL I bet you would happier with a 14X7 APC-E
The 13X6.5 is better suited to 4s1p operations. Any way,, tell us how it goes!

wagen017 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (1/1/2008 10:38:53 AM)

Happy new year to all you guys as well!!!!

Yesterday we flew the AJ for the first time. First impression: impressive little airplane! Second impression: let's try the 14x7 prop!

best, volkert

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (1/3/2008 9:38:22 PM)

Volkert,

I think that you are right about going to 4S packs and 14X7 prop with a BEC and that is what I am in the process
of doing now. For the past few months, I have been involved with a remodeling job for a friend and now that it
is over................I'm, BACK to some serious AJ modifications.

Not so much with the basic design of the AJ, since "JETSKI" did an excellent job of designing this special plane
that bears his name. I have decided to change some little things and modify some other things that have caused me
some concern as I did my basic test flights many months ago. This is just a case of an "OLD DINOSAUR" Grandpa
getting carried away with a few little changes that will make him more comfortable flying this great little plane.
So there! In the next few weeks I'll get the upgrades sorted out and get them posted.

lwatson -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (1/9/2008 3:59:53 AM)

Stick with a 13X6.5 on a 4S. 14X7 will be too much. IMHO.

Hey everyone. I usually posyt on RC Groups. I thought I would check this forum out.

papajeff, I like your tail wheel. Who makes that one and which size.

Cory

wagen017 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (1/9/2008 7:48:37 PM)

PappaJeff, if I understood it correctly it would be a 14x7 on a 3S pack, and 13x6.5 for a 4S pack. Anyway, we will both give a try....

RC4X4 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (1/10/2008 5:19:23 AM)

wagen017
I use a Axi 2826/12 with a apc 14x7 prop and I am running 4s.

Thanks for your comment, I just don't like to use those tail wheel assemblies that you have to insert
into the rudder. So, at the NEAT event, I saw Jason Cole had this great tail wheel assembly on one
of the planes he was flying and that was that! Here is the link; http://www.hobby-lobby.com/landinggear.htm
I used the smallest one (SCEO-18) and they operate great. Let me know
when you get yours and how you like it. You could post a few photos here, you know!

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (1/10/2008 9:35:06 PM)

Larry & Volkert,

I always thought that the AJ fanatics out there in the "RC Universe", (hey, now I see why Mark Vigod named this web site, nice)
recommend using a 13 x 6.5 with 3S packs and 14 x 7 with 4S. See, now I'm confused (that happens when you get to be a
Grandpa).

I have been using the Flight Power, EVO 25, 3700mAh, 3S pack with the 13 x 6.5 and the only issue that I
encountered was a slight lack of unlimited vertical power and hover hang time. This fact prompted me to change
to 4S EVO packs and add the new Castle BEC. Now, that's why I am going to test several different capacity
Flight Power 4S EVO packs and prop combinations. I will start on the bench with the watt meter and when the
weather cooperates, I'll do actual flights. So, that's the plan.

C-182,

It always amazes me how, at most every Event and Show, there seems to be some guy hanging around
that must have escaped from the local "Rest Home!" That strange old guy with David Baron just has to be
one of those escapee's! There is a rumor that shortly after that photo was taken, the old guy was darted
with a tranquilizer and transported back to the "Shady Rest Home."

WHAT? YOUTALKENTOME? WHATAYOUTALKINBOUT? THEPHOTO........OHTHATPHOTO!
Like I informed C-182, that old guy's back at the Home he escaped from, somewhere in Upstate
New York. They say that he is not responding to the daily shock therapy. Too bad....so sad!!!!!!!!!!!!

RC4X4 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (1/12/2008 3:44:02 AM)

Thanks papajeff. I thought maybe that was from Hobby Lobby. I had put a Sullivan tail wheel on mine. Here's a picture of my AJ and Eflite Eratix.
My AJ has a Axi 2826/12 in it spinning a 14x7 prop. I use Flight Power 4s 2170's and Maxamps 4s 3000mah packs. Castle 60 amp speedo with a Quark bec.
Hitec HS-81mg's for servos.

Cory

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (1/13/2008 2:39:15 AM)

Cory,

Have you tested your power system with a watt meter? If so, what were your results?
My power system included a Hacker A30-10XL / Hacker X-55 ESC / Flight Power EVO 25
3S-3700mAh / 13 x 6.5 prop and the results at full throttle were; 40.2A 10.3V 410.2W
at a flying weight of 48.4oz which is 137watts/lb. This is just fine for 3D flight, but I would
really like to get to around 175+ w/lb. and that's why I will go to 4S packs and add the
Castle BEC. It looks like you did a great job with your AJ & Eratix builds.

OnTheEdge -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (1/14/2008 1:21:26 PM)

Anyone have a problem with the front hub adapter on their Hacker A30? I put my prop on my AJ Extra last night and when I tightened the prop bolt, the aluminum shaft on the adatper twisted right off right at the back of the prop net. Surprisingly it didn't take much to have it happen. The aluminum is very light and there is a hole drilled in the center which makes even weaker.

airraptor -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (1/18/2008 1:00:47 AM)

I have mine powered with an e-flight power 25, castle 60, 4s 3200 evo 30, and an apc 15x4 e prop its at 51 ounce's. with common sense regulator and its around 700 watts or so

With 220w/lb. it looks like you do not have to worry about reserve power, right?????? With all that power, how does she fly?

Edge,

I just took a look at my Hacker prop adapter and I see what you mentioned about the center milled threads. Yet, I have repeatedly changed
props as I was testing different sizes, and I never experienced a problem like yours. I would think that you might have just had a bad one for
whatever the reason. I should think that Hacker would replace it for you, so why not give them a call. Let me know how it turns out.
