On to the ESC. Hacker included their X-55 ESC with the A30-10XL brushless outrunner and once the motor was installed, it was simple to fit the ESC just under the motor on Flitons special "motor mount cage." Just connect the three wires from the motor to the three wires of the ESC and maybe you will get the motor to turn in the right direction. If not, just switch any two of the three wire pairs. Hey, it was a nice touch that Hacker has already attached those "NICE" gold pin connectors to both the motor and the ESC! "THANK YOU, SEAN!!!!"

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/7/2007 4:25:26 AM)

Let's SPEKTRUMIZE the Fliton AJ Extra, now! The AR6100 Rx seemed just right and Dr. Electron informed me that the range was adequate for a 3D
machine like the AJ, since most of the maneuvers are within a pattern of "up close and personal." A backer board was installed on one of the formers (ZAP CA did it again) and a little velcro did the job.

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/7/2007 4:33:50 AM)

A short "Y" connector was inserted into the Aileron pin position on the receiver and both ends were attached to one of the formers to mate with the aileron servo wires from the attachable wings. Yes, I'm an "Old Dog" Grandpa and I have to label both ends of the connectors to make sure that the correct wires get connected properly! Also, the ends that go to the receiver are labeled too.

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/7/2007 4:37:31 AM)

Even with the HUGE equipment bay, it's nice to have everything labeled and properly layed out in a logical position. This will help to make the pre-flight preparations at the flying field go smoothly and help avoid potential problems, hopefully!!!!

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/7/2007 4:47:49 AM)

The canopy and hatch cover just had to have a magnet closure. I guess that the right size magnets were used, cause the modification was simple and effective. Once the 1/16 plywood plate was CA'd in place, the magnets and the washers were just Z-POXYed in place and that was that!

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/7/2007 5:02:40 AM)

The cowl needs to fit to the nose very carefully. Take some extra time and make sure that the position is totally correct. This AJ needed to have the front of the cowl slightly re-configured so that the Hacker outrunner would turn properly without binding on the cowl opening. Also, the prop
adapter should extend out of the cowl far enough so that the prop has proper clearance. In addition, the cowl must be lined up properly so that the
cowl screws will contact the balsa rails on either side of the motor cage. Again, the directions and photos in the Fliton manual are excellent.

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/7/2007 5:15:34 AM)

The spinner did not come with the AJ Extra and I picked it up at Tommys place, better known as Performance Hobbies, our LHS that always has
that one little something that you need to complete any, and every, project that you are working on. This spinner was nice because it had a lightened aluminum hub and is a little different.

rmenke -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/11/2007 6:48:20 PM)

Pappa:

Love that spinner. Who makes it, gotta have one for mine in yellow. What size needed? Received my Maxamps battery, 4,000mah 14.8 V. Should push this puppy right along. If too heavy, can always add it to the AXI 4130 big boy. Dimensions are 1" X 1 3/4 X 5 1/2, well within the box sizes you gave me. Going to visit a good HS in the next city down the road tomarrow for some servos. Don't know what will happen if they happen to have one of the early AJ's in stock. Whats wrong with having 2? It seems when you have two of the same thing, the first one tends to live foreaver making you look bad for anticipating and providing for the future. Thanks much for the help! ENJOY

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/12/2007 3:27:17 PM)

Rmenke,

Nothing 's wrong with having two AJ's.......and if the 1st one encounters an issue, the 2nd is immediately available as a back-up, right? The spinner
is a 2" (2 1/2" would be OK) E-Spinner from ElectriFly # GPMQ4718. If you can't find one at your LHS, try on line at www.greatplanes.com. Once you have some photos of your AJ, I sure would like to see them. Have a good weekend!

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/13/2007 4:44:41 AM)

Well, tomorrow it's off to the NEAT event in Roscoe, New York. Greg Covey (AKA Dr. Electron) and his strange and diverse crew, sometimes known as "THE ELECTRONS", will be attempting to maintain proper decorum and with the CD and Pres. of the RCCR, Matt
Kirsch and his trusted advisor, Sir Edward Britton III, we will be providing coverage of the event for RC Universe. May the force, or any other cosmic happening, be with us!!!!!!!!!!! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....................Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee........................Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa BONZI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bsipro -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/18/2007 2:48:44 AM)

hey papajeff
I saw you at NEAT I was going to say Hey but you were running around. your AJ looked great. did you get to fly it ? . crazy windy the P51 looked good sounded good to.
I built up a AJ for my buddy he loves it you can float around like a CUB of fly 3d awsome.

Taildragger726 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/19/2007 12:06:42 AM)

Ah Papa,,, feeling rather "Blue". Just stuck my AJX in the gound. Hit the low voltage cut-off at an un recoverable attitude. Didn't hit hard, but I am not going to repair it. WHY !! CAUSE I HAVE TWO NEW FG AJ EXTRAS ON THE WAY!!! Wa-hoo!!

That was a good airplane, I learned a lot. I actually got a tail touch while hovering on the last ill-fated flight. The cowling, canopy and wings are fine,,, hey, I just might talk my self into fixing this plane,,,[sm=50_50.gif]

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/20/2007 1:19:39 PM)

Rmenke,

I just found the spinner info: http://www.electrifly.com/miscproducts/gpmq4700.html
They do look good....I just might have to get some more.

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/20/2007 1:30:35 PM)

Bsipro,

I always seem to be running around like a nut-case at most events, but you could (should) have just stopped me! I really would have enjoyed meeting and speaking with you. Now, don't do that again! Hey, Ithaca and Roch. are so close that hopefully we will have the opportunity of meeting at one of the auctions or events and, if so, you better just track me down!

Tony,

Sorry to hear about the demise of your AJ! It is sad to loose a friend, BUT you have two more on the way, right? Hey, with the parts that were not damaged, you could create a COMBO-AJ EXTRAusing the FG fuselage. That should certainly make for some interesting photos. Let me know when you get the FG's and some photos would be nice.

rmenke -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/20/2007 6:36:05 PM)

Tony:

I know hindsitght is a pain. Am lucky to have a JR 10X that has a built in timmer loud enough for me to hear when flying around the IC engines. After my maden flight I enter the time on the trans and modify it as reasonable. Seldom now have any cut out problems before I land. Several of the guys that do not have this feature on their transmitter use kitchen alarms taped to the back of their transmitter. Bad enough to damage or loose one to time rather than dumb thumb, get used to useing a timmer on all your flights, even the glow or gas. Lost a 30% gasser to running out of fuel a few years back doing a inverted harrier about 25' up. No time to do nada, almost tears!! Took a while to rat-hole a new one. Have a tough finance department that does keep me in reasonable check. Gonna be in dog house this month, so might as well splurge huh? Its all Pappa's fault, well almost. ENJOY

rmenke -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/20/2007 7:04:46 PM)

Pappa:

Thanks, just ordered one from Tower (spinner) as my computer was acting up again. Looks line another modum, second in about 60 days. Have not received my AJ yet. Read a interesting report on the Fiber fusion 46" Katana, and just had to order one. Looks like I can use my AJ gear and switch when it finally comes in. My "honney do's" are almost done, interior/exterior paint, new carpet etc. and am getting anxious to get back out with the gang, and have a good flying electric. Past balsa electrics built from kits were a disapointment, looked nice but dogs in the air. Still love my RCX planes.com foamys, but want something that will fly in the wind a little better. Am now at the stage of being dangerous to the models. Can do the vast majority of the 3D stuff and moving toward the dreaded ground. If the AJ flys as well is claimed, should be around for a good season or so. Summer about over here, about another 30 days of good weather, then rain and fog fog fog. No indoor facilities around that are available during the bad season, but selsom freezes. You should be flying about now? What ya think? Favorite move is harrier down from altitude -100' or so to landing. Gonna break most in half if you miss the bleep on the throttle at the last moment, but is great when well done!! ENJOY

My 9303 has a timer too. I usually depend on the SC and the "soft cut-off". It was a hard cut off this time. I think I will start usuing the timer feature. Papas idea of mixing parts is intreresting,,,
Any word on Hitecs new digital 65s and 81s? Are they out yet?

rmenke -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/21/2007 12:54:35 AM)

Taildragger:

Think the hitec 65's are now out. You may consider the JR Sport 45 mini, around $21.00 at Horizon, they have 46 oz of torque, the same the full size standard servos used to be. I am a nut for torque, but with 46 oz, you can fly a standard 40 sized airplane with these mini-servos. Amazing to me. Yes, get in the habit of using that timmer on all your aircraft based on kown flight time. Will save you more than once. Timer is especially usefull on the fast Quickee and Formula types. The ability to slow down and prepare for landing is much safer, at least for me, than engine out, must make this just right to come down from near 200 mph to reasonable landing speed. ENJOY

Taildragger726 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/22/2007 2:44:13 AM)

The new FG AJ Extras have arrived,,,,,,,,, Shipping out early next week !!

Mikel-t -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/22/2007 1:50:32 PM)

Trying to set-up the control throws, etc. on the Tx, I found that the elevator halves were not level at rest and under load. Apparently I had CA'd the hinges on the left half without enough gap....I try to fix it but wound-up taking the whole thing off and installed (2) Hitec 81's for each half....what a pain...I hope this works using a "Y" harness and installed the servos ( one on left side one on right) with the controls arms opposite each other.

Haste makes waste!....true'r words where never spoken. UGH! Mikel-T

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/22/2007 3:33:03 PM)

Mike,

My elevator halves were slightly off also. Here is a link to Taildraggers thread where this is discussed. See post 79.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5353253/mpage_4/key_/tm.htm

If I am reading this correctly, it seems that they are supposed to be slightly off. Or, am I loosing my mind at my advanced age?????????
Maybe, Tony will let us know about this.

rmenke -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/22/2007 6:50:39 PM)

FG:

Great, my motor, battery, servos and controller are all here and waiting for this bird. Its Saturday, and have rain for the first time this year, great time to be working on a good electric. When weather clears, can jump in the outback, run 3 blocks away and fly in a new park or off the roadway of a new subdivision and get my kicks for the day. I tend to stay in the park and away from the street light magnets, but there are tree magnets in the park even though small. Unvfortunately the kids become a hazzard, will try to catch the plane in the air, little respect at first. They all want to fly it, none have any experience. Gotta quit being very lazy and taking off on a picnic table with trees on either side. No problem, except with heavy wind gusts. The grass in this park is high and the new large blade type. A 60 glow would have a hard time getting off. They do slow down quickly though. Come on brown truck!!!

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/23/2007 2:28:46 AM)

Well, yesterday turned out to be a perfect day to get out and do some testing and so, I did!

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (9/23/2007 2:41:55 AM)

The cooling air-intake holes sure do the intended job of keeping the motor, battery and ESC cool. Just remember that the exit hole must be at least 1/3 larger than the intake.
