Very nice that you were able to keep your AJ so light. I like your approach to the split elevator with using two servos. I'd be interested in knowing what the watt meter results were, if you did use one. Also what size prop do you run? Let us know how your flight goes and feel free to post some photos. That would be nice.

Well, the planes were just cleared from customs (after only 8 days...!), the engine/controller were picked up by US Postal today. It seems we are getting somewhere now! In two weeks, I should have everything [;)]

Oops, sorry forgot to add that in. I'm running a 14X7 APC. Watt meter? Watts that? Just kidding, actually I don't have one. Maybe I can borrow a friends. Haven't had a chance to fly anymore, it's been windy, raining, and snowing. Maybe this weekend.

If you had as much fun at the Huck fest with Mad Max as I did with him at the Joe Nall, I'm sure that it will take you a week or more to get back to normal! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....................Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! I sure wish that I could have been there with you guys......maybe next year. Thanks for the great photos of the event and your FG AJ's sure look fantastic! I'll be working on the testing of various battery/prop combinations in the next few days and will post the results. I've got my 3S & 4S Flight Power packs all ready for the task. I did receive one 4S EVO 30 and since that is their new super discharge pack, I can't wait to get the results. Having been at the Huck Fest, do you have any new combo
suggestions for me to try? If so, just let me know and remember that I have the Hacker A30-10XL motor with the X-55 ESC on the AJ. Take care.

PapaJeff, I was talking with the FlightPower guys and there was talk of using a 4S 2500 Evo-Lite,,,Hmmmm

Papajeff, I have a conversation with Steve Rogers today and believe it or not, he spoke highly of you!!![:)]

I will be trying the 4S 2500 Evo-Lite. Steve thinks it will hold a higher voltage deeper into he discharge cycle than the 25's/30's.
When are you going to start posting you results??

Here we go: planes arrived! Only now motor and ESC is still in Customs.

It will be VERY hard to keep that box closed until I finished moving into my new house (half December)!

Was looking for servo suggestions for AJ. I was thinking 65-hg's, for aileron, and two 65-hg's for elevator, and then 81-hg for rudder. OK? or should I use more 81's.

I am going with a hacker A30-10XL and wondering about the battery. I am leaning towards polyquest 3S 3700's. But what about 4S? Brands?

If I go with 4S I will need a BEC unless I get the new hacker controller, but are they on sale yet?

Thanks in advance for your help.

PS. Need to set it up for 3D.

Choices...choices....choices!!!!!!!!! I'm sure that you know the theory; Ask five RC guys the same question and you will get five different opinions.
Regarding servos (and most other components), I try to follow the Mfg's suggestions as I feel compelled and obligated to build as they recommend.
I feel that this is the proper manner to do a review. My concept is that it's about them not about me. I'm just the observer of facts
as I see them and then I attempt to report the facts in an objective & honest manner. As such, Fliton recommends Hitec HS-81 for Ailerons &
Elevator or "elevators," and a Hitec HS 81MG for the rudder. Now, Taildragger726, a super contributor (and super nice guy) to this thread and many others, has used four (4) Hitec HS-65's. Some say use (MG) metal gear servos, others say (HD) Karbonite gears or those with (BB) ball bearings. A little confusing, right?

Let's get down to basics and make it relatively simple; use a good brand of servo, look at the Mfg's recommendations, and I like to then look at the
TORQUE (let's call it power) figure for what was recommended. Stay in the same torque range and use whatever brand you like.

With all this in mind, I used HS-81's for each aileron, (1) HS-81 for the elevator, and (1) HS-85BB for the pull/pull rudder. It's not an issue of right or wrong choice, it's just a matter opinion.

As far as the issue of Li-Po batteries goes, it's the same situation as the servos! For my build, the Hacker A30-10XL with their X-55 ESC is the power system. I will be testing various combinations of batteries and props to determine which will give the best power to weight ratio for the type of flight that the AJ was designed for...3D.

Hopefully, this will be a good test of which is more effective 3S packs or 4S packs with a BEC.....(The new Castle Creations BEC looks good)
which prop to use; 13 x 6.5 or 14 x 7 or 13 x 4.3...... what size pack 3700mAh or 4250mAh or 2070mAh or (2) 1800mAh in parallel?????????????
And on and on and on. I just gotta tell you that lately FLIGHT POWERbatteries (http://www.flightpower.co.uk) have become extremely popular with a lot of top pilots in all catagories of RC flight. I truly agree with them and have had amazing results with their packs. I will be using Flight Power packs for the AJ tests and feel confident that the results will be most interesting. Take a look at their web site and tell me what you think.

Wagen017, if your build is going to be delayed by a move, weather ( I understad you have WINTER where you are located[:D]), you may want to wait for the new digital mini/micro Hitec servos. There will be digital versions of the HS-65 and HS-81 available soon. With the new elevator joiner, a single elevator servo is fine. I am prefering metal gears for the tail surfaces. I also think a tail mounted rudder servo provides a CG more suited to 3D flying. The AJ Extra has a pretty wide CG range, don't be shy experimenting with the CG.
For power, I am getting 45-48 amp draw from Flightpower 2070 3S and the Hacker A30-10XL with a 14X7 APC E prop. Almost identical numbers from am AXI 2820-12. I have a Flightpower 2500 4S Evo-Light on the way that should work well with a 13X6.5 APC E.

Hacker X55-Pro Brushless ESC

(3) Hitec HS-81 + (1) Hitec HS-81MG Rudder Servos

(1) Fliton 4S 2150mAh Lipo Battery

(1) APC 13x6.5E Propeller

Dubro 1 3/4" Nylon Spinner (White)

Deans Connectors

Hitec 24" Servo Wire Extension

For best IMAC performance, select Hitec HS-65HB servos from the above pulldown menu as replacements to the HS-81/81MG servos.
With HS-65s iso the 81s. I guess it will be a great setup, except for flight time (6 minutes? [X(])

Since electro is new to me, it seemed like a good idea to follow Fliton's recommendations. Until now, they were always OK.

Just thought I would share my decisions and my rational:

1) HS65HB's all around they are lighter and better centering than HS-81's
2) TP 2200 Extreeme 4Cell 25C, only 218 grams and only $109 bucks
3) CC 10 BEC that I can program to 6volts to give the 65's plenty of power.
4) Hacker A30-10XL

I decided this stuff based on weight and power. Don't know the prop yet but that will be based on a watt meter and experimentation.

As luck would have it, I was reading Andrew Jesky's thread on rcgroups and this is very close to a setup he flew. His recommendation, "keep it light".

As I build this, I will also share any mods.

BTW, I got a FG yellow one. So they are still available.

This thing is really nice, but I already have a build question. On the first step of the motor mount cage one attaches two diagonal pieces to the bottom #3. These fit up next to piece #1 and #2. These two pieces are not identical, one is 1/8" taller than the other one. Does the tall one fit up against #1 or #2? The instructions suffered in the translation, and I see no mention of it in the build thread.

I think I discovered it by looking at a couple pictures, I think the tall one goes next to #2, because #1 ends up with a double thickness of plywood on the top.

One piece is longer because of the built in right thrust,,,, right thrust,,,, right thrust,,, don't buld it reversed like I did on my Rogue. Took a lot of shimming to get that one right.[:D]
