I need to make a comment on the wheels, they are simply a joke. The main wheels are too thin with no rubber for cushion, they are what I typically put on a 16 oz foamy. It is particularly strange given the rest of the quality of the kit. At first I thought I could at least use the tail wheel but it turns out to have too large a hole drilled in it for the wire.

Don't let these negative comments discourage you from getting this plane, the form, fit and construction is superb. It is just really strange that the wheels are throw aways.

Taildragger726 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (11/6/2007 11:09:14 PM)

Larry, none of us like the main wheels,, but they are light and work OK. The hard part is finding suitable axles thatwill work with the LG legs. The gear legs are rather narrow near the axles. Most aftermarket axles need such a large hole,, could comprimise the strength of the gear leg. Look around for wheels you like that will work with the stock 'axles'. The tailwheel is easily replaced with an aftermarket tailwheel assembly[;)][;)].

Tony & Larry,

What's up????? Wheels...wheels....wheels! Larry's not happy with the wheels? Who can blame him, but for me, I just had to change them from the
"yellow" color and happen to find some blue ones, as you can see. To me, the pseudo axles (actually a bolt) is what I would like to replace with a real axle. Yet, as Tony pointed out, that is an issue also. I guess that the bolt is OK, especially if the wheel pants are used. If anyone
has a suggestion, bring it on. Concerning the tail wheel, the pull/pull rudder system made the choice simple and I used the Hobby-Lobby tail wheel
assembly that is made just for pull/pull setups. I like this type because the structure of the rudder is not compromised by having to drill a hole or make a slot to accept a wire or screw from the tail wheel unit.

lwatson -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (11/8/2007 2:39:06 AM)

For main wheels I found some laying around, I think they are Dubro lite's, for axle I used a 1 1/4" 4-40 allen head with two non-slip nuts and one regular one. It looks like this, and provides a perfect offset for the pants.

wagen017 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (11/8/2007 9:19:23 PM)

Anybody has been using the original wheels on a grass field? They look a bit crappy, but are light..

wagen017 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (11/8/2007 9:23:59 PM)

BTW I was surprised to see that Andrew Jesky is participating this week in the World Champion F3A championships in Argentina.

Hope he will do really well!

Larry,

Great mod! Thank you for posting it and I just gotta tell you that I'm going to do exactly as you have. Till now, I have not used the wheel pants, but thanks to you, now I can use them.

Volkert,

I have used the little wheels, without the pants, on grass with no problems. Now, thanks to Larry, I'm going to do what he has suggested.
I also send best wishes to Andrew Jesky and hope that he RULES at the F3A World Championships. thank you for letting us know about it!

Tony,

Thank you for bringing the Castle Creations BEC issue to our attention. Great find!
Basically, the Castle BEC when used with the Spektrum AR6100 receiver, experienced a compatibility issue. The cure is to slightly change the normal manner of attachment of the BEC. Castle is aware of this problem and has addressed it on their web site; http://www.castlecreations.com/products/cc_bec.html

lwatson -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (11/12/2007 5:08:37 PM)

This thing is almost ready! What is the balance point (CG) for neutral inverted? Right now I am at 3 1/2 inches from the leading edge at the root. 3 3/4 would be the carbon spar.

BTW I could not get the castle link to recognise the CC BEC. (Latest beta software). Am waiting on a reply from CC.

Well, it looks as if the FJ version of the Fliton AJ Extra 300S has influenced the new AJ video. So now the new video of the FG AJ Extra
is titled; "BUNS OF STEEL"
I thought that we were supposed to concentrate on the flying characteristics of the AJ, right?????

Wow,,,

Got to fly today with a 'healthy' (FlightPower's service seems equal to DA ![sm=thumbs_up.gif]) 4s pack and "WOW" again! 2500 EVO-lite, Hacker A30-10XL APC 13.5X6.... Hovers at half throttle. New pack so I flew it for 5 minutes, put 1300ma back into it. I'll put the Watt meter on it soon. ( I know this is a proven set-up). The pack was against the wing tube, with a tail mounted rudder servo and the C/G was about right, just slightly nose down when hoisted by the wing tube,,, without the hatch. Got to love this Florida winter weather !![:D]

corroda -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (11/19/2007 7:34:50 PM)

Been keeping an eye on this thread for a few weeks now and just ordered two FG AJ Extras. I live in Scotland so i can probably expect a long wait and a nasty shock when they clear customs.

I've been eagerly awaiting Papajeff's review on which battery set-up to use, so it's good to here that Tony has had a good experience with the Flightpower 4S 2500 Evo-lite. I'd like a comfortable 10 mins flight from my battery pack and would be interested to see how the Evo-lite compares to say an 4S EVO 25 3300. I've followed the recommendations and ordered a Hacker A30-10XL.

Has anyone posted any photo's of the tail mounted rudder servo mod? I'm reasonably new to the RC game and would appreciate copying a proven method rather than bodging something myself.

I've still to order servo's as I'm waiting to see if anything develops on these new Hitec digital servo's that were mentioned. I'm in no desperate rush to get the planes finished as we're prone to 90 mph winds at this time of year.

Excellent thread, please keep up the good work

Gary.

Here is a shot of how Malves did it from another forum board,,, Very clean. I mounted mine a little further aft. You will have to create your own linkage/horn. Good luck!

Corroda,

Tony may be on to something with the Flight Power 4S EVO-lite 2500mAh. I'll start the Flight Power testing in a few days. It should be interesting!

corroda -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (11/26/2007 7:54:54 PM)

Thanks guys,

Can't wait to hear how you get on papajeff. I'd be interested to know whether you think the added weight of bigger cells offsets the benefit of having longer flight times.

I've started seeing adverts in the UK for Hitec's new digital micro servo's. Basically they seem have a 50 added to the reference from the equivalent analogue servo e.g. HS-5065MG instead of HS-65MG and HS-5082MG instead of HS-82MG etc. It would appear that there is no release date as yet in the UK so I'm wondering whether they are worth the wait considering the added benefits and the know doubt much higher price.

papajeff -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (12/8/2007 12:38:12 AM)

Corroda,

Concerning the advantage of the new Hitec digital servos it's just a matter of preference and your flying style. A top-notch 3D pilot would certainly use and benefit from the new digital servos, yet for me the Hitec HS-81's & HS-85 worked just fine for me.

I really like these Flight Power packs and the weight of a 4S compared to a 3S pack is important only if perfect 3D execution is the goal. Again, it is just a matter of what you want to accomplish. Some guys here have posted that the only way to go is the 4S pack at (so&somAh) with a 14" prop...........and others say that the best is the 3S ????mAh pack with the 13 X 6.5 prop. There is no right or wrong.....if it works for you, it's OK!

I'm still going to do the testing and the results should be interesting. Let me know what you decided.

Tony,

What's up in Florida? Have you been flying those FG-AJ's alot lately, or what??????? Hey, can you do me a favor and check out both of your new AJ's, and your previous as well, and let me know if the CF wing tubes are still all the same thin-walled type. Also, do you notice any stress fractures on any part of the wing tubes and if you grab either end of the tube between your thumb and first finger and apply a little pressure, does the tube end seem like it would crush with just a little more pressure? Enquiring minds.....want to know!

Taildragger726 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (12/8/2007 3:06:41 AM)

I'll take a look at that! I have not had any problems,, but I fly 'low energy' 3-D. I think the Katana MD wing tube works well as a replacement. It needs to be shortened a bit,, but only about $8 from Atlanta Hobby.

Tony,

Thank you for the suggestion. I should have the new CF wing tube and landing gear this week from Atlanta Hobby.

Question for the week...................

One servo or two for the AJ elevator??????????????

wagen017 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (12/25/2007 8:54:06 PM)

hey guys, I now report myself back into the net.....moved house, setup shop, unpacked my AJ, ready to go! I bought two AJs, sold the 2nd one to a flying buddy, he is now building his as well.

Corroda, you shouldn't be too worried about customs, with the current dollar exchange you still get a better price after transport and customs. I hope you ordered the full set, with motor and ESC as well, makes a huge difference...

Taildragger726 -> RE: FLITON - AJ Extra 330S "Build thread" (12/26/2007 12:40:23 AM)

Way to go wagen017 !![:D]

Papajeff, on the GEN 2 AJX's, the elevator 'stiffy' does a wonderfull job, no need for two elevator servos.
Go ahead and put a nice tailwheel on there and ya might want to put the rudder servo back there too. I am liking the CG just behing the wing tube with he canopy off for 3D, you can allways move the battery foward a bit for the groovy stuff.[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]
