We had a customer in the shop today that has seen quite a few ZDZ40 cc motors with failing spark plug inserts.

Does anyone here have any experience in seeing the same thing and is this perhaps something to watch out for on the new 50. The store at which I purchased mine said to be very careful with tightening the plug.

Please let me know if anyone else has experienced this condition and what the cause was.

Thanks,
Mark

Like all aluminum head engines, I'd wait until the engine is cold before using a wrench on the plug. Aluminum doesn't have much strength when hot and it's easy to bugger the threads. I'm not sure what you mean by spark plug insert. There is the lower plug shield, but it's pretty stout. Don't know how you'd wreck it.

Easily fixed with a Heli Coil or a new brass insert from C&H.....

Haven't had any problems with my ZDZ 50 and the plug has been out at least 8 to 10 times. I had problems getting the timing correct.

Try a little something called copper cote....it's a mixture of copper and lube that you apply to the threads of a plug before you screw it in...
Keeps threads from galding and tearing out the threads..great in aluminum...

I've had the plug out of my ZDZ40 many times....no problem.

I've got a ZDZ80. i haven't taken the plug out yet...mainly because - i can't! it is tight as can be. i was thinking about trying it with the engine pretty warm.

however, based on what i read above - is that not such a good idea?

to BigBird Flyer:

Yep, it is an ultimate. an Ohio R/C kit. i believe about 63"WS, 1300 sq.in. I have the ZDZ 40 in it.

The kit was ok, but really overbuilt. it ended up at 17lbs. just too much for the 40.

Ohio R/C is now out of business as I understand it.....

Thanks Dave . I have been looking for a larger Bipe. Maybe 72" to 80 ".
I have a ZDZ 50 in a 16 lb Extra with unlimited power and vertical. You might consider the upgrade.
