I've had this engine since around October, but still haven't got it to run just the way I'd like. Mainly speaking about the idle and the transition to full. It seems like the motor will idle all day long at 2100-2200 RPM, but try to bring it down any lower than that and it wants to quit. The problem is at that RPM my plane (Great Planes 25% Yak 54) just doesn't want to slow down. It seems like half the time on short final I click the throttle trim down lower and lower and by the time it slows to a good landing speed it quits before touchdown or soon after.

As far as the transition, I've just never had a very smooth flow from the low to top end. It could probably be described more as an on/off switch than a transition really, with a happy cruise setting somewhere in the lost mid range.

I'm running the engine on a 50:1 mix of Amsoil Dominator oil with unleaded gas, and turning a Zinger Pro 20x10 prop. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Depending upon the low-speed mixture adjustment, you may be able to get the idle a bit lower. You could also try increasing the amount of oil in your fuel to see if that has anything to do with it. As a last resort, you can try going to a lower-pitch propeller. This will require you to possibly go up in prop diameter to keep the full-throttle RPM in line. A lower-pitch propeller will give you more braking action when the throttle is retarded.

If I remember correctly as it's been a while, I was able to lower the idle a bit by richening the low end, but then the engine would load up and hesitate upon advancing the throttle. I haven't tried increasing the oil content but perhaps I'll try that this weekend.

If I decide to try another prop, would you suggest a 21x8 as a suitable option?
