hello,
i am in the proccess of building a 1/18 scale sdkfz 251/9 halftrack, i have all of the steering working and figured out. i know there are some members that are in the proccess of making thier own Haltracks but im at a stand still, im kinda new to rc in this scale so as far as a motor, esc, gearing combo im lost, i would like some suggestions and some things to look at. it will be towing a pak 40 behind it so it will need some torque. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hello jamatthe,
I'm interested in your project, and I have a couple different one's going on at this time myself.I was wondering if you have a RC Tank to use as kind of an example for Idea's on how to power your halftrack.A picture or two of your model would be helpfull also. There are some of the guys on this forum who may be able to offer some real help to you.Give as much detail as you can with what you have as far as the model goe's,like was it a static or exsisting RC model.Be glad to offer any help if I can. well thanks i appreciate it, i dont have any photos at the moment, but the internals consist of a futaba 7 channel radio with recievers and a servo that controlls the steering which was mostly made from scratch. i started with a 1/18 scale halftrack (skfz 251) it was a static model. for now im not going to have some complex steering device but just a solid axel that turns the drive sprockets. i have a motor but im kinda new to all of this so as far as the speed controller and the correct motor and gearing im pretty much lost. i want it to be geared to tow with a pretty low top speed like a tank. So as far as functions io dont want anything to complex just something to power it forward and reverse at a realistic speed.

Hello again jpmatthe,
Like I said above i'm also up-grading a 1/12 Tank and now a Jeep, and I will be using a regular 4 chanel radio in the jeep. Some of the instalation situations will be simular. The front steering can be done with a basic servo. To drive the track is going to be your bigger challenge. You may want to look up ( MATO TOYS-They are in canada and sell parts for tanks) and are widely used by members here on RCU.I would think the gear box drives for tanks would be one of the easy'er ways to make your tracks work,if there is room and it would work out right. The shaft size on the ones that fit the tiger tank is aprox 5/16 inch. They also sell sprockets, idlers ,and tracks. What you have on the static model, may or maynot be useable(with-out seeing what you have). And with a regular radio, some kind of ESC is going to be needed to operate the drive ( motor-or-motors).Check the forums,it may take a little searching. But you may find just what info you need to help you continue on and have the best chance of success with you project.Good luck, and mabe others will add some help for you.

this may sound stupid, but how do you get the upper hull off?

Hi Stuff,

To answer your question, I took the screws out

I did cut some small holes in order to gain access to the screws located in the track wells.

I sent you the email doc, I think I wrote how it was done in there

ok looked at the word pad, but it didnt help with dis assembly. anyhow i figured out those track skirts. they do pop off, but are glued on with a strong glue, and i broke one peg. it can be fixed later. i found out the sachels inside and the fire extinguisher pop off cause they are glued on. got the top unscrewed and off. now i am stuck.

how did you get the inside lower hull stuff out? the seats etc. also how did you get the drive wheels off? dose the fake motor pop out to? i think it has some plastic tab type things holding it on. also i think i am going to leave the steering and go full tank control steering for simplicity sake. i dont want to rip the steering apart etc if i dont need to. also for the seats did you just cut them out?

Stuff,

The inside lower floor I pried out( It's glued in place) using a large flat blade screw driver, the same with the seat floor and dash board, and engine. The oil pan I cut away what was necessary to install the steering servo. (I used a micro servo from a park flier RC plane.) A lot depends on what you plan to do with your conversion, are you just going to drive it around? Or are you planning to do RC Tank combat. When I started I removed as little as possible in order to keep as much of the halftrack intact as possible. Later as I found that I needed more room for electronics, only then did I remove the other stuff.

The drive sprockets have to be pried or cut from the chassis.

If you go with the tank steering idea you will have to make sure all the vehicle weight is on the tracks or it will not steer well. The front wheels axel can be removed from the chassis by removing the screw that is in front of the motor, then using a drift punch or a short piece of wire that fits in the screw hole, tap the axel assembly out from the chassis.

Here is the link to the club web site with a improved writeup on the 251 conversion. http://web.mac.com/ksoc/iWeb/Special%20Projects/Merle%20Sdkfz%20251.html (Thanks KSOC )

My suggestion is to go slow and plan out what and how you want to go about doing this conversion. Note My 1st conversion took almost 2 weeks to do.

Now I can get one ready in about 4 hours. To date I have done 3 german halftrack RC conversions. Halftracks 1&2 are posted here and else where, the third halftrack is to be traded to a member of our club.

I hope I have been of some help.

Regards
bullyhys

k I was assuming the floor would pop out. they really like their glue. I plan to have the weight on the tracks as the battery etc will be back there. I plan to just drive it around as there is no tank fighting club etc around here. with the drive sprockets, is it a matter of just using a couple flatheads to pry it off or is it more difficult? a lip or anything to overcome? figured the steering assembly was held in with that single screw. never thought of taping it out the bottom. guess thats why there inventions :P.

anyhow seeing as thats the hard part, what do i need esc wise for running it like a tank? i have never really bought hobby grade radio/esc stuff before. I am thinking something in the 75mhz range if possible. some links would be nice if you know any.
