Hi guys,
Well about a week ago had a major crash and somehow damaged my b/l motor. I check the main shaft, hovering shaft and everything I could think of. Everything seemed to be ok. Well, went to the lhs and bought an e-flite hacker e3-37 3000kv b/l motor. The lhs guy said it was much more powerful than the broken one. Finally got it mounted and can't seem to get off the ground. I am esing an e-flite 25-amp esc so I thought everything would be good. Check the blade angle, no vibration, no binding. I do know that the new motor is a 2 pole verses the old 4 pole. Anyone got any ideas?
Jim

Wonder if the ESC got damaged as well? If it did, it won't be visable...throw a meter on it and check output voltage. What TX/RX are you using? I know my stock TX had the throttle gimbal pot go bad and it wouldn't progress to max power thru the pot....there's two things to check. I'd almost suspect TX if 's a stock TX.

Hey Jim, That hacker and eflite are mates and are recommended to be run with each other, usually makes a good match. I am wondering though if you turn the right pot, (plt) to 3 o'clock and the left pot, (pit) to 1 o'clock if it makes any difference. Try it and let me know your results buddy.

Yea, Rusty
I did play with both controls. It just doens't seem like I have enought head speed.
Hi Crash
I am using the stock transmitter. Will check the esc voltage. Never thought of that.

I did try to program the esc to 2 pole from the 4+ pole it was defaulted to. Does that make much difference?

Hi Jim, First of all the E3-37 is a 3700KV motor. Betapilot set up my "blinged" HBKV2 with that motor and a Castle Creations Phoenix ESC. He set it up with an 8 tooth pinion. With that setup, I am getting more headspeed than the original motor. Since I don't have a tach, I am going strictly by sounds and quickness of change of maneuvers, etc. I don't do 3D yet, but does nice normal flight maneuvers. I have an ESKY 3900 with a 10 tooth pinion that I would swear does not have the power of the Hacker with the 8 tooth, but it is not shabby either. And yes, it is a 2 pole motor.. Tom

Hi thaus,
Right now am running a 9 tooth pinion, and was going to try a 10 tooth. But if you are using an 8 tooth I guess that will not work.
Just don't know what to do now, and I was hovering so good.

Jim, there is no reason you can't go to a 10 tooth. Are you using different lipos when testing in case you have a lipo that is going bad? If you think you have a headspeed problem, start turning the left knob counter clockwise. My setup with my Hacker has the left knob between 12:00 and 1:00 and the right knob about 3:00. If you have a pitch gage, unplug the leads from the motor and check what pitch you have at low throttle, middle throttle and full throttle. Something could have moved. Generally if you have a good motor and lipo ( nothing dieing) headspeed problems are because you have too much pitch set. Along with too much pitch comes a hard to get adjusted tail. Check for friction. If you adjust your tail rotor belt too tight, it really binds everything. Again, if you have a 10 tooth pinion and it is easy to swap, there is no reason you can't try it.. It may work... Tom

Tom,
I did play with the pitch knobs. Without the motor attached the machine is smooth as silk. I did look at the pitch, same as always. I do suspect the esc. When the old motor was damaged (before I knew it) I did try to fly. Both the motor and esc got very hot because of the binding in the motor. Even with all these problems the tail seems to be under control. I will get this even if it sends me to the poor house, LOL.

Hey Jim, It could be the ESC. It might have gotten damaged when your first motor croaked.. I hear ya' about the "poor house"! lol ...This hobby is addicting and the HBKV2 is a nice flying heli with a brushless setup. Tom

Hi Tom,
I think I found at least part of the problem, my motor was too tight against the main gear. I loosened it up and it started to hover a little better. Right now I have the HOV PIT trim pot set to about 1 o'clock and the PIT TRIM set to 3 o'clock. The battery and esc seem warm as usual, but the motor is very hot. I don't think that is normal. Any one have any ideas? I don't think there is any binding in the head or tail. The tail holds good.

Hey Jim,
My motor does not get all that hot. Are you sure you don't have the belt set too tight? When you shut it down, after landing, does the rotor spin for a while, free-wheeling at the end, slowly spinning down? One of my servos on the Hacker equipped heli died. As soon as I replace it, I will hover it for a battery and feel how hot it gets.. Hopefully tomorrow.. Tom
