I just finished my first tank on my Savage X. I have two questions...

1. Using the heat cycle break in method and I'm driving around at 1/4 throttle. I drive the truck up next to me to get a temperature and as i let off the throttle and apply the brakes, the truck rolls for about 6-8 feet before coming to a complete stop. Are these brakes weak or is this normal? Do I need to make an adjustment?

2. I noticed I was about to the end of the tank and figured I'd just run it out. As the tank got closer to empty, the truck was running at high rpm's. I was not even holding the throttle down and it was running at about 1/4 or even 1/3 throttle. Is this normal? How do they typically run when they are about out of fuel?

1) Yeah, you'll need to eventually adjust the brakes...

2) I wouldn't recommend running the tank dry, especially during break-in...too hard to control temps. Go ahead and fill it up during your cool-down. Makes for a consistant playing field as far as controlling your temps during your break-in.

I just thought I should run it out since I am not going to run it again until tomorrow. I thought I've read that people like to finish with an empty tank and run the fuel out if they won't be running again the same day.

First off, the batteries in your truck might be going dead, thats what i would check first the AA setup isnt very powerfull, and does not last long. You need good strong batteries to get that stock servo to pull the break hard enough. So thats the first thing i would check.
From there, look into adjusting your linkage.

as for your lean issue. Its common to have it lean out like that at the end of the tank. The RPM gain that you saw was becuase of the lack of fuel being delivered to the engine, causes a lean burn on the engine. This isnt good for your engine, but some still turn off the truck by pinching the fuel line, same thing.. Also note that the stock setup for the savage has a nasty habit of getting a 1/2 tank lean issue. You may notice the truck runs a bit leaner through the last half of the tank...
I personaly recomend getting the tool, or using your hand to plug the pipe and shut it down.

Lastly, your trucks engine is still new, keep that in mind when it acts up during the next few tanks. if the engine is sealed properly it will all come together as you get it tuned in.

i think your off to the correct start tho.. keep it going and let us know

I ran about two tanks today. This truck is awesome! Driving around in the parking lot I ran WOT a few times for a few seconds and was a little disappointed that it didn't kick into second gear. I ran it around the yard and jumped a gravel sidewalk and around the ball diamond. The truck definitely brakes better when in the grass or on the gravel. At the end of the tanks today it just died, no revving of the engine. Before I called it quits, I headed back to the parking lot and let it rip and it finally kicked into second gear and i was really impressed. I have never seen one of these trucks in real life yet so i was amazed at how fast this thing goes. I am really going to like this and I appreciate all of your guys' help. I can't wait until i get to start it up again and go. Now i just need to find a good bashing site.

Hey whats going on all. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your savage. I had one not too long ago but had to give it away. But I JUST now bought the X 4.6 so I can't wait to try it out. I'm still very new at the game and will probably be doing alot of searching and asking Q's so be on the look out.

I know with my last X I was worried I wasn't breaking it in right (I think everybody is there first time) and I even had to replace the glow plugs. But when I FINALLY got it broken in it was great. My breaks were doing the same thing- they would not engage hard at all. I had too drive it around in circles to slow and stop it. When you drive it and release the throttle the brakes arn't suppose to be on yet correct? Brakes only come on when you push it up?

Thanks again all.

Balto

P.S. The loose dirt on the diamond is where its at. Those donuts are SICK!

Been there, done the whole enchalada with Savage kits..none better...I just gotta say, 1 thing. BATTERY is the key to brake power. put a strong hump pack in and you'll be able to stand'er up on the nose. Belive me, volts are one thing, amps are what make it happen. Put the strongest hump pack you can get your hands on in there and your problems are over!!!!!
