Status: offline 		I just finished glassing a pair of floats for my .60 Piper Cub. I am curious to why none of the pictures show the use of a ventral fin? Has anyone has any stability issues, particularly with the Cubs?

Status: offline 		I've flown Cubs with and with out the Ventral fin
On a Cub the difference is very minimal, because of the relatively long tail moment.
The shorter the tail moment and the slower you fly the more you'll have the need for the ventral fin

Bottom line is it can't hurt, and it does help.
Necessary? That's Debatable

Status: offline 		Likewise, I have flown them with and without....the edge, I think, would go to having it on. Disadvantage is that it adds weight way at the back, and you have to compensate with additional nose weight, bringing your total wing loading up. However, it is not a necessity.
I once put a Hots on floats, and that lil devil certainly did not have enough fin area. It was uncomfortably squirrelly. It definitely needed a sub fin, but I was at a float fly and didn't have any materials to do a field modification, so I called it quits after one flight.
