Hello
I'm planning on building a tug boat using a electric trolling motor used for fishing. It's 12 or 24 volts. I boat is going to be 3 to 4 wide and 5 to 6 feet long.
I need info on speed controler that would handle that kind of power. The motor is 4HP .
Any info or ideas you have I want to hear them.
Thanks

MCD probably has a big one you can use.

They are typically used in large robots.

Wow, that's about 124 amps on 24v and 250 amps on 12v, if it is geared/propped for 4hp. Do you photos of this beast?

Ya I have a Minn Kota 30 pound thrust trolling motor. No clue how much power that is. I don't think its any where near 4 hp as a deep cycle will last a a few hours at speed 5.(maxed)

Maybe I am missing something obvious, but why not use the speed control from the trolling motor?

The motor has 4 Hp on the side of it. I would use the speed controler but it's 5 forward and 4 revrerse.
Not enough control.

I don't need reverse as the motor will spin 360'. I'm going to mount it in the middle of the boat.

Zooman,
From what's been posted I would say you have two choices, spend lots of money, or sort of cobble together a mechanical speed controller.
Most trolling motors use a foot pedal that varies a resistance to control speed. No idea exactly how that thingy is put together, but there should be some way to use a servo to do that varying part. Might be a rather large servo, but still cheaper than an ESC rated for that kind of current handling!
Good luck!
- 'Doc

Pictures would be very nice!
