Friends,
After ten formulas and more than one thousand hits, TESTED DIESEL FUELS has been slightly reformatted, resumed and reported in this new thread DIESEL FUELS, OILS, COMBUSTIBLES AND ADDITIVES. The previous thread can be discontinued since you can find here its main results.

Some interesting diesel fuels proposed and discussed in various EVERYTHING DIESEL threads have been reported.
Some very original mixes are really tempting, so additional experiences and comments are needed.
Extensive experimental and field testing of oils gives space to improvenments and opinion sharing.
Additives are a broad range of products, of very different avaliability depending on type and country.
Ether or no ether opened the way to testing of low or no ether mixes...................

Everyone can report the formula he uses and its results. Keeping your report updated is welcomed since it enriches and actualizes the thread.
Non authors can add their experiences and/or comments to any reported formula by reediting and adding their views.
Characteristics/avaliability of fuel components can also be reported.
DIESELS WILL LIVE UNTIL THEY WILL BE FUELED!

Here I propose a simpler form for fuel report. Oils, combustibles and additives have a free form.
As a suggestion to fuel authors, please refer to your fuel No and/or name when quoting it in other threads, this will help newcomers.

Comments:
The engine modification we made was to replace the carb and inlet on the OS.91FS with a set from an OS.52OS. All that is required is to enlarge the mounting bolt holes, I do not remember the # drill I used, just large enough to allow the stock bolts to be used. Do yourself a favor and use the gasket here. We also removed the head shim and lapped the head to the cylinder. I use toothpaste.
For starting we used an inline tank with 50:1 regular gas and Amsoil Saber. This allowed the combustion area to become warm enough to sustain ignition.
Wee also have a C&H Ignition installed and used either a NGK or a Rimfire spark plug. I found no differance in performance or lonjevity between the plugs.
Once fully warmed up there was no noticable smoke coming from the exhaust at any throttle position. I have in fact held a white piece of cloth directly behind the muffler, but not touching and only had a lite brown/ tan bit of residue after 15-20 seconds.
Transition is responsive once the needles have been dialed in.
After long periods, 15+ minutes, of 2-3,000 opperation there is some coughing untill the engine reaches full rpm. While observing this transition in the dark I noticed red sparks fly out the exhaust. We determined the plug was fowling with carbon as well as arround the exhaust valve.
I am still working on developing a spark ignited diesel. By using a spark ignition there is a slight weight penalty and a power drain. I feel as these are easly offset by the ease of use and the engine will last much longer without raising the compression beyond the design limits of the engine.

DIESEL FUEL No: ...03................ NAME: ... SLOPER's 10% Ether Mix..ORIGINAL DATE: . 01/04/07..

ORIGINAL REPORTER: . SLOPE- SOARER...LAST EDITOR:.merugo.......LAST EDIT:.6/29/2007.....

FORMULA (in order of decreasing percentage of volume ):
1)-....51..%...kerosene...
2)-.....16..%... semi synthetic engine oil for diesel car use....
3)-...12.5..%.... modified olive oil.
4)-.....10...%.....ether
5)......2.5.%... 2-ethylexhyl nitrate

The way the mix it was obtained: ...to a 1/3 litre of commercial model diesel fuel with 30% ether content and 24% castor oil content they were added :
25mls ignition improver
125mls synthetic engine oil
160mls of the modified olive oil
357mls of kerosene (paraffin)..

1)ENGINE:..PAW 2.49..CARBURETOR: .RC/fixed .. RUN TIME: .......STARTING: electricUSER:.slope-soarer
Comments: used in 5-25°C range. worked well. 20' running times. throttle very good

2)ENGINE:..1.49.......CARBURETOR:.RC/fixed...RUN TIME: .......STARTINGelectricUSER:.slope-soarer
Comments:.. used in 5-25°C range. worked well. The mix was tested in engines with fixed venturi as well as engines with RC carbs. Idle was very slow and steady. Throttle response was very good. After 4 minutes at a low idle the engines with RC carbs would repond smoothly to quick throttle opening without any "hiccups" The oil content is high but the mix works very well, perhaps due to the high oil content compression seal is improved ?
A PAW 1.49 with fixed venturi ran for some 23 minutes on a 2 ounce tank of this mix, the engine was set up for maximum revs and was attached to a 100 inch wingspan glider.

The mix has been extensively tested and my PAW diesels show no signs of distress or high temperatures when using it.
Other mixes using increased amounts of the synthetic engine oil without any modified olive oil, and also increased amounts of modified olive oil without any synthetic oil were tried. These mixes ran O.K but were not quite as good as when both olive oil and synthetic oil were incorporated in the mix. No doubt the ether and oil content of the 10% ether mix could be reduced, but as it stands this mix runs extremely well and has the benefit of being a lot cheaper than a normal high ether content fuel.

My engines start easily and quickly with just a "choke" prime and a spin of the starter motor. Compression is about half a turn LESS than when using mormal model diesel engine fuels

OCTYL NITRATE cetane enhacer, such as AMSOIL may be difficult to find in europe, at least in pure form. Most brands sell it extremely diluted with kerosene, so its real price skyrockets. Here an useful way to have it by post in pure form and neat price.
Go to http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/products.html and you will find this

-Veggi-Boost combustion enhancer is available in 500ml cans for people to create their own specialty fuel. It is essential to anybody using vegetable oil as a diesel fuel and will improve performance and help protect both the engine and the environment. Veggi-boost is a cetane improver and is added at about 0.1 % volume. Just a tiny amount has a large effect. It contains nearly 100% 2-ethyl hexyl nitrate which aids detonation inside the engine combustion chamber, enabling vegetable oil to be used more readily in a diesel engine. Also great if you're thinning veg oil down with petrol - it will restore the cetane value of the blend-

CHEVRON says.
Cetane Number Improvers (Diesel Ignition Improvers) Cetane number improvers can reduce combustion noise and smoke. The magnitude of the benefit varies among engine designs and operating modes, ranging from no effect to readily perceptible improvement
2-Ethylhexyl nitrate (EHN) is the most widely used cetane number improver. It is sometimes also called octyl nitrate. EHN is thermally unstable and decomposes rapidly at the high temperatures in the combustion chamber. The products of decomposition help initiate fuel combustion and, thus, shorten the ignition delay period from that of the fuel without the additive.
The increase in cetane number from a given concentration of EHN varies from one fuel to another. It is greater for a fuel whose natural cetane number is already relatively high. The incremental increase gets smaller as more EHN is added, so there is little benefit to exceeding a certain concentration. EHN typically is used in the concentration range of 0.05% mass to 0.4% mass and may yield a 3 to 8 cetane number benefit

2)-.....33...%......ether
3)-.....22...%.....castor
4)-.......2..%..... synthetic oil

The way the mix it was obtained: .....straight mixing by volume

1)ENGINE:.Various, mostly PAW...CARBURETOR: .fixed.. RUN TIME: ..Various....STARTING: ..as few as 2 flips, hot............. USER:Lou Crane.......
Comments:...This is close to factory recommended mix for well-broken-in PAW 1BB or 2BB engines. With 25% total oil, it works well in well-broken-in plain bearing PAW engines.

Good starting, easy setting, dependable fuels mixed from John Deere starting ether, campstove kero, SIG AA Castor and AN from Clutton (in USA). John Deere starting ether claims to be 80% high quality technical ether (diethyl?), and blends volume-adjusted for that % do well, dependably.

Additional user observations:
Nickname :Lou .Crane.... Observation: The high vapor pressure of the ether fraction complicates use with uniflow type tank venting in CL flying -characterized by long (up to 7+ minutes) running full-bore at optimum setting - most recent experience indicates non-uniflow tank venting works better. Diesels have ample fuel draw to live with the changes of dynamic fuel head in CL flight if tank width is kept reasonable.
