every once in a while, i'm still amazed at what you can purchase for a dollar.

found this at a garage sale just down the street. the little girl that sold it to me only wanted a dollar, but i gave her $2.50.

its 27x11x2.75" and seems to be a wood construction. any idea's on the model? gas or electric? and where would i go from here if i wanted to make the boat a sea worthy vessel?

seems to be solid. i'm assuming the "cabin" wasn't part of the original design. whats the little square recess on the bottom of the boat for?

The recessed are was for the the bottom mounted strut ( the thing where the prop shaft goes thru )
Nitro engine ...
Strip that thing down ... REMOVE that thing ( whatever it is that is sticking WAY up in the air in the middle , like its some kind of podium or something ) and have fun

What you've got there is a Dumas SK-Daddle and yes, you did get a good buy for a buck!
I'm guessing that the recess was for a strut support bracket.

well restorations are under way. i dont think i was the first to purchase this boat from a garage sale.

the boat has a split personality, theres the very skillfully built era (gel goat, prof looking silver paint) and the diy nightmare phase,. (bondo, hot glue, white house paint and nail polish stripes, etc etc. 4 brass tubes stuffed in the hull to accomidate a cheap undersized plastic prop. etc etc) i image thats where the pedastal came from.

i'm finding alot of holes filled in with bondo.
what would the 6 holes in the transome be used for? water drainage? what prevents the water from leaking in? or some sort of stabilizer/trim tabs?

so other than radio servo's etc, what do i need to complete the boat, and what do you suggest?

what size engine should i get? and do you think the nitro engines will bolt right up to the mounts in the boat? what size?
sorry for all the questions

am i missing parts for the rudder? just out of curiosity, whats the brass tube beside the rudder for? cooling intake?

The brass tube is defintely part of the engine cooling system, my dad actually has a scratch built boat that looks identical to that, and has a similar water cooling device for his engine. NIce looking boat, and can really move if you do it right. Can't believe you bought it for a dollar!

just a guess but by looking at the prop that came with it, you've probably got the small version. A decent .10-1.2 engine would make it a decent performer.
Those holes along the bottom of the transom are for trim tabs.

I'm sure that under that old paint is some beautiful mahogony. I love the old roundback look. The holes on the transom were for trim tabs more than likely. I would totally strip it down and start over with some good hardware and a stock zen. With a little work, that boat could be a thing of beauty. You should have given her $3.

Think Ron did a typo there , and meant a .10 to a .12 but ya might go up to an .18 also .

well i looked up some info on the sk daddle.it seems most are 36", mines only 27" the dumas web page i found, said they can handle up too a .40 engine. do you think this boat will handle an engine that large? was the sk daddle available in different lengths? im just wondering if this was a scratch build since the wood is different than most of the sk daddles i've seen on line.

will a .10-.12 engine be enough? this boat is a foot wide. i dont think thats the original prop. the piece of brass tube that passes through the keel, had 3 other pieces of brass tube stuffed inside one another to down size to a 1/8" drive line. i'm assuming its part of the diy nightmare phase. also does it matter the rudders not centered? the entire assembly is centered (rudder/cooling intake) but the rudder itself is a good 1/2" left of center.

I built a Dumas Skdaddle 20 in the early 70's.....looks pretty much like yours. It used a .19 engine and was slow because i was young and used a ton of fiberglass.

It was hard to tell the size of the boat by the picture so I was trying to go by the prop size which looked like the 1 inch prop that they had.
These boats go back a lot of years as I remember them from back in the late `70's. The engines back then only put out maybe half of what today's engines do. A .21 (I typed it right this time Bob! ) would be a good choice.
The rudder might be OK but I'd update the driveline to something a little more modern.

No ... but , of course , the further off center it is , the worse it will turn to the opposite direction .
