I just embarked on building Jack Sheeks old Spitfire stunter and I'm thinking with its beautiful lines it would look spectacular covered in some old style yellow silk so all the ribs would show through translucently. Silk would be the easiest thing to handle with all the compound curves on the wing too...

Here is a good place. Inexpensive if you buy enough to do several planes at a time. http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/silk/habotai.html

Thanks - Dharma's prices look VERY good. I have no idea what weight to order, but I'll get one of their sample packages and see what looks closest to what we're used to.

I think you would want the 5 mm (momme) silk.

Here is another place:

You do want 5mm weight.

And another: Silk Connection.

I concur with the 5mm weight. Some of the China silks have been prewashed and will not shrink quite as much as the silk that we used to use. You will want to dope your open areas with high shrink nitrate or butyrate to get it to tighten nicely.

Since many hobby shops no longer carry much of a selection of dope, I've been buying from Aircraft Spruce (homebuilt supplier). They carry both Certified Coatings and Randolph, nitrate and butyrate in high and low shrink formulations. You can get both colors and clear in quart containers at reasonable prices.

Brodak's also carries a complete line of dope.
