At 4.8V under load there should be about 50% capacity left in a NiCd or NiMH pack. However, there are many variables and the only way to know for sure is to cycle the partially discharged pack to see how much capacity is left. Then you will have a better idea of how low you can go next time.

WOW!! You'd think with a college degree and an electricians license I'd have caught that before I posted!
Here are some other ways to do it.
(Of course I had to make it difficult on myself by using the DPDT switch . It was the only one I had at the time!)

Hey Rich! I didn't see you offer any schematics! But I did deserve the jib.

How does checking the loaded or unloaded voltage of a NiCd or NiMH battery before a flight tell you what the voltage will be at the end of the flight? A voltage test will tell you if there is some sort of failure or if you should not have flown the last flight. It can't tell you much about the next flight.

I go one step further than just checking the voltage. I hold the load for a few seconds to make sure the voltage stays steady. A battery that's just about to crap out will show a high voltage at first but then quickly drop under load.
