Could this be anymore confusing so many choices. Is their a charger out their that I can charge multiple Rx packs Ni-cad and NimH 4.8 to 6.0 volt up to 2500 mah packs? New to this up to now I have just been using the charger that came with the radio system.

Sure theres several chargers that will fit the bill, The triton, ace digipace are 2 that come to mind at the moment ,most of the higher line of chargers will do the lipolys as well.

whatever nimh/nicd or li-ion/lipo, different battery must use corresponding charger to charge, because of the different charging mode, charge is a process which tranfer the electric energy to chemical energy at highest efficiency and highest speed, safe is the most important than others while charge.

for more information, please visit www.chargery.com or contact at jasonwang3a@163.com

This is a really good topic, as I searched for a suitable charger that wouldn't break the bank. I'm running two packs in each of two models. So, I need a charger that will charge two receiver packs simultaneously. I need a charger that will do C/10 (no peak detection) and will do 1C (with peak detection). Since I keep my heli inside and my plank outside, I need two chargers, so money is a factor. What I found in my search was that most inexpensive chargers have a finite number of configurations (e.g. charge rates) available and the more expensive units might be more flexible but either only charge one pack at a time or are just too expensive for me to buy two of them. I'm kind of surprised there are more products to fit this sort of need out there on the market.

Well, since I couldn't find anything that fit the bill. So, my dad is designing one for me. I think he using the National SemiConductor LM3647 controller. The unit will have a few knobs for config purposes, but no fancy LCD displays or anything. All in all, the units should cost me about $20 or less a piece in parts. Each unit will be able to handle 1 to 10 cells and I can charge up to around 3 Amps simultaneously (2 1500 mAh packs). We can bump up the capacity by going with a larger power supply, but my dad has some power supply units leftover from another project. The nice thing is that I can reconfigure the units fairly easily for completely different duty (like charging my cordless drill batteries).

Been there done it, but home brews have limilations that you must beaware of or you will ruin your packs cause I have. Mostly fast charge and peak detection , homebuilds have a hard time with it, you forget to turn it off etc etc..
The multilex, hobbico, banton are recommended series at a good cost. I use the ICE yea costly but last one I'll need for a long time and covers every thing I do and so safe have to really try hard to ruin a pack. After we build up lots of money in our toys you start to look at the batteries a little different like capacity test to see if they are any good and not getting good life because of bad charging methods.
It's a hard chose a charger with hundreds to choose from but if you list all the things you are going to charge it narrows down fast.

Hey Rich,

Got it covered as my father actually is in the business of building chargers, mostly stuff for the military and typically very complex. The National controller does -DeltaV and Temp/Time cutoff and has four charge modes. So, nothing non-automatic on this controller. We looked at the Maxim and the TI controllers, but this particular National seems to fit best for the given application.

For those doing a constant charge unit, a cheap intermatic timer works great! A lot of the lower end "automatic" chargers just use a fixed time charge. The Accucycle has a 15 hour charge timer, for example.

Different batteries do charge differently but you can easily find one charger that will charge nicd, nimh, pb, lipo, etc. You can drop mega bucks one a super deluxe charger if you want. You can also find a good general use charger for a good price. The triton, and hobico chargers are good general hobby use chargers.

I have a multiplex LN5014. Its a great charger and at a good price. It will charge a wide range of batteries safely. It also cycles. It has gotten really good reviews from some of the battery experts here on RCU. You would be hard to find a charger with all of its features in the $70 price range. It has a few limitations (like only one charge port) but for the price I can live with those.

For your rx packs this charger will work great!

LOL yea you sound just like my son ..... I got it covered "aka Dads doing it"

I hope you help and listen to him when he tells you how it works. My son does Pa Science Ass projects “PSA” and of course Iam the go to guy but he learns a lot and I make him do as much as possible on the build side.

On the charger side after awhile you will want one with memory and capacity tester and LiPO and 10 memory program etc.etc but use the one you got and learn from it then you will know what you really NEED !

BTW the national parts are great also Maxium is cool to on their chargers IC's. But Iam a switch mode guy my self.

I guess I am sort of at a loss here, if daddy was going to build the charger in the first place what was the reason for the the thread?

Maybe you can have a look at this one:
Microprocessor controlled high-performance rapid charger for NiCd/NiMH/Li-poymer/Pb batteries.
Can fast charge 5 cells simultaneously, and each cell has a separate balance port, convenient……
