Brijar -> Anderson Balancing connector? (7/3/2007 7:06:48 PM)

Could somebody post a picture of an Anderson balancing connector on their 3s A123 packs? I need to see which side the white and orange wires go on. A picture of a 2s pack would be helpful too. I am going to just use Futaba J or JR or Universal servo connectors to plug into the balancing slot, and I need to see which side the white wire goes on.

Hello Brijar,

I have attached a couple of pictures for you. One is the 3S pack with the balance connector, the other is a 2S pack with balance connector. Hope this helps.

Hey, thanks a lot, Brian. I just got back from the lake where I ran a very nice 5s A123 setup in my Villain EX. I had a few Futaba J connectors laying around that I trimmed a bit and they work fine in the balancing slot of the Hypersonic charger. WOW those charge quick and I get better runtimes than my GP3300's, not to mention the power! The weight savings is incredible! With 14 GP's, the boat sat pretty low in the water, but with the A123's, the back end is actually out of the water when just sitting. The batteries stay very cool when I run and even cooler when they are being charged. I couldn't handle my old packs just after charging or running.
I LOVE A123's!!!

About the charger, mine gets really really hot when I charge a 2s or 3s pack. I measured it at 120*F. Is it supposed to do that? I would really like to cool it down, so I took off the front and removed the top plate. I see a heatsink in there, and I am thinking about putting a fan over it to either push cool air in, or suck hot air out. Do you have any suggestions?

Hello Brijar,

I am glad you like the batteries. There is a guy here that had an old boat laying around, we dropped some batteries into it and got much better performance. He has since installed a water cooling system for his motors : p

As for the charger, it is normal for it to get warm. It is primarly due to the amount of power it is doing in such a small enclosure (10.8V x 10A = 108 watts). A external heatsink or fan would help keep the temperature down but would in turn create a higher price for the end user. We decided that you guys would probably rather save some money and have it get warm, as opposed for paying extra for a feature that doesn't give you any better charging performance.

Hey, thanks a lot. I put an old fan I had laying around on it, but haven't had a chance to charge anything, since I'm not at the lake, and those darn cells hold their voltage so well[:D]! I can see why you wouldn't sell it with a fan. It works fine without one, but I'd rather not be able to solder with the heat from my charger[8|].

Balancing 3s A123s shouldn't require hitech. Wouldn't just connecting them to a 12v battery do it? This would give a constant voltage charge to all cells 'till full. Tex.

No, I don't think it works that way. You have to give the pack the amount of voltage that it should have when it is full, untill it is full. The amount of amperage you use determines how long it takes to "fill" the pack. When they are full, they will have the same voltage as the charger is putting out. That's how the CCCV (Constant Current Constant Voltage) charging method works, I think.
