Have a dragspec car. Ran six passes this evening. The car was setup the first time with the fuel tubing on the trailing side of the center bar squeezed against the center post = severe wheel hop. Went the other way and the same thing severe droop =wheel hop in the rear. Adjusted again this time leaving 1/8 inch between center post and fuel tubing on both sides no wheel hop car hooked up well. But, the car had very bad straight line charcteristics at about the 100 ft mark would not stay straight. When rolled with no motor engagement the car runs true but not with full on power. Could this be a traction issue at the end of the track or is my caster off? I have the kingpins laid back to about 25 degree mark.

Sounds like once you got the wheel hop fixed it hooked up and about the 100ft mark your front wheels were lifting partially or completely. How much epa do you have set up in the front. You don't need to turn those wheels much lock to lock. Once you get them whipping by overcorrecting you are in trouble. I'd say move the weight around toward the front and see if that doesn't help. Also the front wheels might be aligned with the rear wheels but is the rear axle square? If not when the front end gets light it will pull in one direction or another depending on how the axle is skewed. Were both rear tires the same diameter after all the tire hop? Or were there any flat spots? That could mess up the handling as well.

I have a quarter inch lock to lock, to much? After I posted and talked with my father we came to the same conclusion that the front end could be lifting. But would a valance on the front help this or would you just use the weight present on the car? As far as flat spots are concerned I have not checked and I'm very glad you brought that up as I completly forgot about that. Griz would like to take the time to thank you an the others that post relevent information to what seems to be a hard r/c event to get rolling in the big scheme of things. Your positive attitude and your willingness to help in itsself is very appreciated and just may keep the new people in the sport as good solid and sometimes commonsense information is overlooked, but your there to help. Thanks again Jon and James Heim Aka (Just enuf and road racer)

Yea it sounds like your epa is in the ballpark. You can get stick on weights to use on your car as well. They come in a 4x5 approximate size sheet cut into small 1g weights with a sticky back. I think associated makes them. If you need a custom shape then get out the torch and some fishing weights and make a mold so you can cast one. Use servo tape to attach it to the chassis. Reason I said front end lifting is it sounds just like my top fueler when I finally got the clutch to hit properly and I had a banzi motor installed. It would get real soft then all of a sudden it would jerk to one side or the other as the wheels hit small bumps in the track making the handling crazy. You should be able to cure it with weight and not put any more aero devices on the car to create drag. Make sure the front of the body shell is right on the ground. As low as it can go without dragging. Keeps the air from getting under it as much. A flat spotted tire can cause major vibration as it will hit the flat spot bump into the air a bit which causes the tire to swell and force the front in the opposite direction. This sport is much more violent than other forms of R/C racing. Stuff that you don't think about can pop up and its magnified by the speeds and power to weight ratio you have with a drag car. Your best source of information is the guys at the track you run at. They know the surface and what it takes to get it down the strip at that location. Check out www.imdra.com and get a login on the forum there. Lots of people hanging around there that have lots of knowledge. rcdrags.com is another good site however its temporarily down for a rebuild after being hacked. You'll find that a lot of drag racers have done all the other forms of R/C in the past. There is a lot of knowledge in this group of people. Hope you get a nice straight run next time out but be prepared once you get one thing fixed its on to another glitch until you get it all lined out. Sometimes frustrating but always leading to learning something new.
