I hope to be back for TG. Even if I do, I dont know what I am flying. I was trying to get my P-47 done but thats most likely not going to happen. Are you guys going to make it?

PJ are you going to be at Top Gun?

I'll be there early and probably stay a couple of days late too.


Dino, if you cannot make it to Top Gun, do you expect you'll be home soon after? I'm not headed home till Monday or Tuesday the week after.

Okay, for the umpteenth time, make mine a P-39 Airacobra!!!! As much as I love the P-40, there are several kits of them available in various models and sizes already. Not so with the P-39. You can do it, PJ. I know you can!!!

I just have to laugh at all the "nice" things you are saying about me! LOL I bet it has nothing to do with the fact that you all want more planes!!! Hey, thanks anyway, the little ego could use it!

Yes, I will be at Top Gun this year sporting the P-47 but with some new enhancements. I'll be posting them on the MS P-47 to Top Gun or Bust thread I started last year.

Okay, enough....my 109 is starting to look like a 109 and I should be ready to build the wings here pretty soon. I need them to do the wing fairings. I do have a nice set of drawings on a P-39 and I am starting to work on some details. Here is a question for you P-39 junkies.

How do you feel about putting the engine in the scale location and running a shaft up to the nose? I'm not worried about the design because I have a great engineer who could make it work and make affordable. How do you feel about weight and balance?

Retracts have always been an issue with this plane. I do have some people who would be "in the mood" to design retracts, but would you all rather go with expensive and super scale, or priced right and functional?

My biggest issue is the fact that the engine will 1. get in the way of the retract, and 2. would stick out pretty bad if it where in the usual location.

Any thoughts?

Status: online 		I think your asking the million dolaar questions.Affordable shaft driven, air cooled , scale P39/63., is it possible. I think an heat sink disguised as a cooler inlet and the exhaust outlets oversized could help with cooling. The shaft drive setup could be like the Byro drive unit, offset and geared to help with a possible cooling solution and help withlocating the scale nose gear. Worst case scenario on the nose gear is that you could redesign by throwing away conventional thought and come up with something totally new. Sure it all sounds simple and possibel but I just watched StarGate Atlantis while staying at the Holiday Inn .

I'm not an Electric fan.. But what about an all electric design for the P39??? That would solve a host of problems from the start and leave a lot of leway for sound output right into the design from the get go... Just something that went thru my mind way to early in the morning...

Thank you so much for giving the P-39 some serious consideration. I've mulled over the mid-mount position for the engine for a while and was fortunate to talk with a fellow who did just that. In fact, he was featured in Model Airplane News a couple of years back when he drew up his own plans for a P-63 and made up his own drive shaft. He used a Moki 2.1 that, of course, runs on FAI fuel which burns cooler than does nitro fuel. Utilizing the full scale's carb air intake behind the canopy, venting around the exhaust stacks and the cooler doors on the underside of the wing center section may just be enough to do the job. The heatsink head has merit. Does anyone make one for a Moki?

This gentleman noted that he used a woodruf key to drive the prop shaft and with his Moki's propensity to kick back during starting it damaged
