Greetings,
I've just been playing about with my new YS.91 and I'm wondering if I would benefit from an onboard glow unit once I mount this engine inverted in my Ultimate. I played about with some needle settings and got it running very nicely, but no matter where I put the needles, I couldn't get it to transition as nicely as when I left the glow on until about 1/2 throttle. Of course, this IS a brand new engine, so I'm expecting it to need a fair bit of running before it smoothes right out. Still, I've read (online and in a couple of mag articles) that inverted 4-strokes will benefit from onboard glow for the bottom 1/3 or so of the throttle range. True?

My experience with my FZ91 was that it burbled a bit in the midrange when brand spanking new (mine is mounted horizontally). I had to turn the regulator in a couple of turns below flush to keep the midrange clean enough so that it wouldn't bog down. At half throttle it would tach at ~5000 and slowly but surely drop about 100RPM/second until it died rich. Now it has a couple of gallons of 20/20 through it, so I'm going to reset the regulator and needles and re-tune it to see what I get for performance.

Perhaps a stupid question, but what size fuel tubing do you guys (and gal) use for 91s? I'm using standard now and don't seem to be flow-starved, but I thought I'd ask...thanks!

Having an on-board glow driver adjusted to power on until 1/2 throttle will do exactly the same, so in that regard, yes, it will help. However, I'd agree that you're better off solving what sounds like a carburetion problem instead of masking over it.

That said, onboard glow driver is awfully nice to have, particular on 4strokes where the glow plug may be a little rough to get to. I have it on every one of my 4strokes, inverted or not, and most of my larger 2strokes too. Often times, having an onboard glow will help a 4stroke idle smooth and transition better with an otherwise mediocre FS plug.

I used to use them on all my glow motors (MPI mostly) and really loved 'em. But, now I'm more worried about the weight and will go to whatever lengths are necessary to get that motor running great without onboard glow.

You need a different glow plug ,fuel or more work on settings.
{snip} we have been running the #3 Enya plug for the last couple years. We used the OS F before that but they didn't last as long as the Enya , a local flyer turned us on to them. YS is now selling their own brand plug and it should be worth a try.

I got it to transition 'ok', but just not as silky smooth as when I left the glow on for a little bit. I've never owned a 4-stroke and I don't know what I'm listening for yet re tuning by ear (I used a tach to tune the top end). I'm sure I'll get a handle on it soon enough though!

I suppose what I'm really concerned about is it dieing at idle. It was noticeably 'cleaner' at idle with the glow on and would go considerably lower without dieing. Again, that could of course be due to my poor tuning skill with a 4-stroke, so I'll get my 'tuning guru' buddy to help me out next time I see him. If it can be tuned, he'll do it......he just loves engines.....of any sort

Thanks for the info on the plugs. I use the Enya#3 in my heli engine and my race plane engine with great success. They look shorter than the OS F plug I've got in this YS now though.....obviously that's not a problem?

How do you like my Dodgy Brothers® test stand?

I hope you clamp that stick to a good size bench ! [/QUOTE]

Funny you should mention that......I clamped it to my B&D WorkMate (don't know if you guys get them....it's a folding workbench with a top in 2 halves. You can open and close the 2 halves with a couple of winders and clamp stuff between them) and when I fired it up to full power, it started to pull the whole bench over I ended up having to stand with my foot on the lower leg brace to stop it

I'll fit the engine to the model when it shows up and give it some more running to play with needle settings. I don't want to use onboard glow unless I have to....extra weight etc.....so I'll do my best to get it right without it.
