Gentlemen,

I am building a GP E. Cub and want to go
with a BL motor, verses the brushed suggested
motor. My question (s) is direct drive a better
option than gear drive? Weight is an issue with
this kit,per the manual. The AUW is supose to
be between 4 and 5 LBS. This is my first Elictric
build of a Plane as i'm currently hovering and FF
on my Heli. Which is Elec. btw.
Can anyone suggest a reliable BL motor and ESC
combination for my Cub?

Status: offline 		If you choose an outrunner there is no need to go for a gearbox.
Assuming the AUW reach 5 pound a low kV outrunner delivering 400 Watt will fly your Cub. If you choose a setup which is able to deliver 500 Watt you have the possibility to tweak your setup if you feel the need for more power.

My choice would have gone like this: I would go for 4S LiPo. Since I both like and know the AXI-motors they would be my choice. The AXI 2820/12 have a kV at 990 (RPM/volt, no load). To get 400 Watt at 4S LiPo the propeller should be able to load close to 30A at WOT. 11x7 or 12x6 APC-E propellers is the match. 13x6,5 will be the propeller which is max load, and propably max power.
An option: the AXI 2826/12 comes in 30 gram more (1oz) and have a lot more power to deliver for future planes. Use the backmounts to bolt it on the firewall.

My choice on ESC: Jeti spin 55. Or any other 45-55A ESC. Spin have one advance: it is able to power your RX and servoes at 4S and even higher volts. And the Jeti ESCs work perfect together with AXI motors.

Just some inputs, since nobody have fillid in earlier.

Thanks for your input, I want to have extra power
in the motor for other aircraft also. I'll check out
the Axi 2826 . I like the idea of DD verses gearbox
and the ease of installation also.

BTW, you live in a Beautiful Country.

If you choose the 2826/12 and 4S LiPo success is guaranteed.
Using the backmount you can use "spacers" to get the perfect distance from the firewall. Either buy a spacing kit or cut some kind of tube which suits. If so use small metal-discs to ensure thee tube wont crush the firewall over time.

Every model-flier have to have at least one Cub in their hangar

LOL, My hangar consist of a Heli and I agree, it needs
a Cub. I checked out the Axi motor and Jeti esc, they
sound like the Perfect combination I was looking for.
I hope to start the fuse build later this week. I have
the wings almost done, just have to join them together
and build the wing tips. Then it is on to the fuse.

Status: online 		I recently converted my ElectriCub to brushles/lipo setup. Took out the brushed motor and put in a Great Planes Rimfire Outrunner 35-36-1200/ Great Planes Silver Series 45Amp ESC/ and a Thunder power 3cell 2100 prolite.. The flying weight with this equipment is 40 ounces.. I lost about 10 ounces from the stock setup.. The plane takes off from a grass runway with NO PROBLEM with this power system and flies at about 30 percent throttle. From what I can tell I should get about 15 minutes from the battery. The stock setup was totally worthless in my opinion. Anyway, good luck.. it's a great little flyer..

you on the recommended set up. It was
never a thought to use a Brushed 600
motor, lol.

Status: online 		I'm getting 12 minute flights so far, but I've calculated that 15 minutes with 20 percent reserve should be no problem.. Using a 10.5 wood prop (APC would probably work better, but you just need a wood prop for a cub!).. As far as the motor mount goes, I had to make one from light ply. I ordered the Great Planes Medium mount and it was too big for the cowling no matter what I did with it.. I'll take some happy snaps this evening and post for you.. Overall very pleased with this setup plenty of torque that's for sure.. I put a little more moto than it needed but that's because I want to put floats on it at some point.. Also I think that your wt. is a bit high.. I'll weigh mine this evening also with battery.. I don't think that it's more than 3 pounds ready to fly..

Here are some photos of how I have the motor installed.. Also the plane is 2lbs 13oz.. That's with a Hitec Park flyer type receiver which I've had very good luck with and a TP 3cell 2100MAH pro-lite battery.. Let me know if you have any more questions.. Glad to help..

The BL motor arrived yesterday and now i'm faced
with the motor mount situation ? lol. Also got a Futaba
2.4 Ghz radio for the Cub. What's the Depth of the
mount you made ??
