FWIW, I've always run my antique spark ignition gasoline engines on a 3:1 mix, some of the more delicate ones (like a magnesium Bantam) get 2:1. They run great with that much oil.

I spent the day breaking in my Enya.

I started with a blend of 10% Nitro, 20% Castor and ran 4 tanks just lean of a 4-stroke, but still rich.

I then switched to a blend of 10% Nitro, 15% Klotz and 5% castor and started leaning the top end a bit at a time.

At the end of the day i was getting peaks of between 10,800 and 11,000rpm with a Bolly 12.5x6 Clubman prop.

Overall, i'm pretty impressed with this motor. It's silky smooth at top rpms. I reckon i could've sold it 4 times over to clubmates who were equally impressed.

Did they know how much it cost? :-)

CPC,

None of us have had any doubts about Ken Enya's engineering talent...

This RPM on this prop represents 1.25 HP, which is a whisker less than the MAN/Gierke 05/03 shootout average, BUT this is at 2,000 RPM less than the same and it seems allowing this engine to rev by propping it smaller, may allow it to exhibit higher HP numbers than Dave Gierke saw...

Would you mind telling us what this engine can achieve with other prop sizes - 11x7.5, 11.5x7, 11x7, 10x8, 10.5x8, 13x6, 13.5x6...?

I believe it can already be peaked to full power, with absolutely no risk.
From these numbers it would be possible to plot the HP curve and to ideally prop it for best performance.

DarZeelon,

I've got a few of those sizes in my prop bucket. Next time out i'll try them out and see how it goes. It won't be for another month unfortunately because i'm packing and moving house over the next few weekends (closer to the flying field .

I did try a Thunder Tiger Cyclone 11.3x8.2 prop and got exactly the same RPM's. Not surprising really as by my calculation they both have almost identical prop load figures going by the old formula of (diameter x 2) + pitch

Xjet, i don't think the price would've mattered.
The most experienced engine tuner in our club and an owner of many enya's himself looked over my motor and said the quality is just suberb and still what enya is renowned for. He also said it's got the most pinch he's ever felt. When i told him it was compression and not ABN pinch (and removed the plug to prove it) he was gobsmacked. I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up with one next flying day.

Now, i have a broken-in motor ready for home and i have to decide what model i'll put it in. I'm thinking the Thunder Tiger Imagine 50 pattern(ish) plane would be a good home. Any other ideal airframes that you can think of?

CustomPC, keep the reports coming in...

Any chance of a peak reading using a boring old, standard issue APC 11x6, or an APC 11x7 or a 12.25 x 3.75?

It's great to hear what it does with a "Thunder Tiger Cyclone 11.3 x 8.2 prop" (Were you serious? Does such a prop exist??) but it would be great to hear what she does with a prop the rest of us might have seen at some stage in our lives.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Harry,

They sure do. I was surprised myself when i was in one of the local hobby shops (who are also the Aussie TT importers) and saw them on the rack. I went to the store with the intention of buying a range of props for the enya so i had to try one of these. Enya suggest an APC 11.5x8 prop but such an APC prop doesn't exist (at least in glow sizes).

The TT's come in some very odd ball sizes and they had one which was very close to the suggested size so i grabbed it. It was cheaper than the APC's too.

I asked about them in this thread here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6092526/anchors_6092526/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#6092526

FWIW, the TT 11.3x8.2 and the bolly 12.5x6 had the same rpm's but the bolly definately moved much more air on the test stand. I like the bolly props better than APC's.

I have an APC 12.25x3.75 and also a 13x4 and maybe even a 14x4. I'm not sure i have an 11x6 but i have 11x7 in a couple of brands including a zinger wood which is very light compared to the nylons.

CustomPC, I didn't even know TT made props - just goes to show... you learn something every day...

Our club members have seen good results with the Bolly props. They seem to perform at least as well as equivalent APCs, based on what we've seen so far.

We used Taipan props in the 70s - another great Aussie product. I've still got an orange 10x6 stashed away in my collection (See pic). The price tag says $5.85 - about 2 hours work back in that day...

I've got a real soft spot for Enyas and am keen to see how your new engine performs.

Custompc, it sounds like you have decided to keep it! im also interested in some of your prop figures, i would love to know how an 11-7 performs. thanks for all your info .
cheers Greg

Grant,

I got a bag of 10 Taipan 11x7 props, from that day and era...

They are the same orange in color.

Kyosho made props in the past, limited to only 12K RPM...

I still occasionally come across Taipan's amongst the old stock when i browse the odd hobby shop here. I always dismissed them as cheap rubbish, so i've learnt something new today.

Greg, well after running it and the having to clean up the subsequent mess on my equipment and going home with the smell of castor and burnt fuel all through my clothes and stuck in my nostrils, i would've have sold the lot and switched to electric in the click of a finger , but common sense prevails and i'll probably keep it.

It's a sweet engine, and is certainly delivering the goods so far. I hope when i start leaning it out that the amount of mess reduces somewhat.

Oh, and to bring up the Saito comparison again, my .62 turned 10,000rpm with a bolly 12.5x6 on 20% nitro, so the enya has more grunt from the same cubic inches and weight. Ed was right

There are two head buttons for these engines, the CL version apparently has a lower compression which would make it very suitable for the American craze for using high nitro but we'll keep that one a secret between us . If you have the time and inclination it'd be interesting (to me anyway ) to know how the revs compare on the same prop but zero nitro fuel. If the compression is as high as it seems to be then it should fare quite well.

As for the Taipan props, the old deep cuff orange are very flexible but the grey and black ones are quite rigid and efficient.

Snap!

I've got some 8x4 and 8x6 props. Some are orange, some are grey.

They were a great prop in their day (I sure broke enough of them) but I expect they're not as efficient as today's computer-designed meat-slicers. (How's the finger Dar?) :-)

I've cut my finger twice on APC props and that wasn't even when starting the motor.

I had a little reminder that a chicken stick is a wise thing when i was starting the enya.

After it ran for about 5 seconds during 1 attempt to start it, i went to flip it again and put the slightest pressure on the prop with the stick and got the shock of my life when it fired and whacked the back of the stick.

It must've stopped near the top of the stroke with enough compression and residual heat to fire. Right there and then i was glad to be using the stick or bruised fingers would've been the result.

One of the fingers that my Saito 100 tore up a couple of months back is still not properly healed. The blade went right through the nail-bed and it looks like it's killed it -- no new nail is growing to replace the one that's almost fallen off.

This finger is still *twice* the size of the same one on my left hand -- I think there's something wrong with the drainage system that's causing fluid to build up and not drain away.

Fortunately I can type again now and it doesn't affect my flying (I'm as bad as ever I was).

I just wish my Saito would spin a wooden prop without detonating so then I wouldn't have to use these awful APC meat-cleavers.
