I am not getting something here. I don't understand the settings for the batteries I am trying to charge. I have read the instructions and still don't really get it. Could you give me the settings I should be using for the following batteries.

1. 1300 nicd glow igniter. what charge current, peak mv, cutoff v for cycling this battery.

2. 1400 nimh 5 cell rx pack. what charge current, peak mv, cutoff v for cycling this battery.

3. 2000 nimh 8 cell tx pack. what charge current, peak mv, cutoff v for cycling this battery.

4. 12v 7ah gel cell. what should the cell number be and charge current for this battery.

Please let me know.

Thanks

Lots of settings are a matter of preference and a wide range of settngs will work. I'll just post a single setting in middle of range or post it as a max value.

all can use up to half an amp (.5) and the nicad use 8 mv per cell the nimh use 5 mv per cell. Cut-off voltage can be .8 volts - 1 volts per cell.

No idea about gel-cell, but it does have 6 cells right? Each cell is 2 volts.

one other small thing, make absolutely sure you don't charge that gell cell above 2A, something a little less would actually be better for it so you don't vaporize the gel electrolyte and mess up your pack.

Thanks for the replys. That's one thing I'm not sure about is how many cells are in a 12v gel cell. If there is 6 then the 989 would not work because the cell count only goes to 5 for gel cells. Now as far as cycling nicads, am I looking for mah close to the battery rating after discharge and charge? I think I am trying to make this battery charging stuff too complicated.

According to manual it can do up to 24 volt gel-cell or pb batts. Mine will not go over 5 cell either.

Since your NiMH's are transmitter and receiver packs, and not run packs, I would charge them at anywhere form 0.5C to 1C. I wouldn't go anywhere above 1C at the most if you're desperate to have them charged. You're going for capacity not punch. The glow driver can also be charged at 1C, but if you want to cycle it than C/10 is the best for NiCds. For the delta peak setting (mv) I would 5 mv per cell on the NiMH, and 7-10 per cell for a NiCd. I would then check the charge capacity compared to the rated capacity of the battery, also take into consideration the temperature of the battery. If the charge capacity is considerably lower than the rated capacity, then you can raise the mv setting a little. For the cut off on these I would use anywhere form 0.9 to 1.1 volts per cell.
For the gel cell I would use anywhere from 0.7 to 1.4 amps to charge. Again, I would only use the higher charge rate if I was desperate to have it charged. For some reason my engineer considered 1 cell equal to 6 volts. So for a 12 volt gel cell set it for 2 cells. You really shouldn't have to cycle a gel cell. Once it's dead, it's dead.

I will update my manual, for pb.
Every 6 volts = 1 "cell" Makes it simlpe really.
Thanks, Tim.

Hey Tim,
If I set the discharge rate at 1.5 amp, shouldn't it be discharging at 1.5 amps? Because it is not. It is discharging at .24 amps.

Thanks
Tom

What voltage battery are you trying to discharge?

The pack is a 1500 nicad 6 cell pack. So 7.2V

I just bought this on the 3rd. Should I send it back to you or the hobby shop(Tower Hobbies)? And what about shipping cost?

Unfortunately, Tower is going to tell you to deal with me. You can try and see what they say, but odds are they'll send you right back to me. In order for us to cover it under warranty you have to send it to me. Sorry, we don't reimburse shipping costs.
