Solid Axles are really the only real way to crawl, the only indepedent suspension truck that can crawl is the Revo.

Most of it has to do with what I think is called "forced articulation". On a solid axle rig, when one wheel goes up, the other is forced down, putting more pressure on the tire and thus improving traction. The other kicker is the differential. On an indy rig, the diff stays low when the wheels move about. This is great for racing as it keeps the CG lower and keeps the rig stable through bumps. But for rock crawling, that diff will hang up on the rocks. Sure, the CG is low, but what you sacrifice in CG is offset by the fact that the diff isn't snagging on the rocks, impeding progress.

And a Revo can't crawl no matter what Traxxas says

Solid axles keep the pressure always on one wheels. You never see a real Rock Crawler with A-Arms.
