Okay...many years ago I was given 5 gallons of nitromethane staight out of the barrel. I have used about two and half gallons over the years for my 1/2A engines (a little goes a long way) and have stored the jugs in my outdoor shed.

I was always of the belief that the nitro did not present much of a hazard as long as it remained in the plastic jug and was not exposed to brass or other metals that could make it shock sensitive. I was told that nitro contained a chemical that would make it turn blue should it have become shock sensitive.

Now my son tells me that his chemistry teacher mentioned the dangers of old nitro. Is there any reason to be concerned? Also in the shed is my old trusty John Deere tractor - I would surely hate to see any harm come to my mower!

Thanks for your insight.

Gasoline is way more explosive than Nitromethane. So i would be more concerned with the tractor blowing up your Nitro stash.

If it's not blue, its safe. It, won't turn blue till you pour it into a can which has caustic corrosion on it.
