Hey,
Just bought a Tam KT kit off ebay. It is the earlier version that is 2 ch. I don't know anything about Tamiya pedigree but I couldn't pass it up for $250. You know me, I'm gonna change everything and put a gun in anyway. I'm stoked because I thought that a Tam was far off in the future but here I am. Besides the obvious, what are the differences between this older kit and the new full option? I think some of these have the single motor but this has the dual. Are the early tam kits like the non-S&S HL's requiring a lot of updating?

Whoops...

Was it a King Tiger w/ Porsche Turret out of Toronto Canada? Sell price of 199 plus shipping? Those are metal-gear'd HL gearboxes jammed into a 36201 static King Tiger Porsche Turret kit. What gave it away was the mention of the solid front axle... only ones that had that were the statics. Bummer.

The Henschel Turret'd KT for $248 plus shipping out of Bradenton Florida, or for $270 out of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, those are both original kits. Those last two are the old 56004 KT. The second motor in it is for the turret traverse assembly, now sold as a 53400 unit by Tamiya (can be mounted in an old Sherman too)

Best thing to do (if you bought the Porsche one) is buy a fresh 56018 chassis pan (I'd not trust the HL locating holes) then mount all existing gear on it, and drop the DMD gearboxes into it, and thats basically a 56007 kit (but with better gearboxes)

You could also go back to the single clutched gearbox too... with an Integy 55t lathe motor in there its a torque-master... climb anything.

Let us know, eh?

Perry,
welcome to the tamiya rc Ktiger .....your early version one has one dmd controller...I suspect, no multifunction controller....for sound and recoil action right. The current version comes with both dmd and MF which requires a four channel transmitter and receiver.

But, the suspension still remains the same..they are rebust and refined.

If I am not wrong, these gear boxes have combined both plastic gears and some brass inserts, which is differ to the current HEAVY duty gear box that comes with metal/brass gears. The current gears in widths is wider than the early version. tHis means more stress can be handled.

I hope this helps....

Yeppers, thats a 56007.

Still had the same suspension system as the 002 (no added roadwheel bushings (the 56018 has more thanjust the brass inserts) and the original type ! gearboxes. You might want to see if someone wants those to repairt their Type 1's, and will get you modern Type 4's (fewer plastic gears)

You might also want to talk to Daryl Turner about his gearbox support blocks and idler upgrades. Useful even if you keep the stock tracks.

And yes, avoiding that framkenstein job was good.

Parts?

Depends on what you need.

Tamiya stock items, like sprues, decals, etc, probably Karen Gasser at the AAF Tank Museum - aaftank@gamewood.net or AAF Tank Museum RC PX

Daryl Turner is a private creater of many tank upgrades, including idler kits, a Pershing gearbox quick removal kit, and support blocks for all the DMD gearboxes. Contact info I have for him is: modelbuilder2K@cs.com

Kenny Kong is the proven leader for metal-cast tracks, though there is a new company that may be competition. As yet, none of the regulars have 'tested' the tracks, so I'd avoid 'em for now. Kenny's e-mail is bigtank2@sinaman.com

You can also get detailing bits from Backyard Armor , ETO Armor

Thats all I have.
