Fellow scale modellers: Here's my problem! Ijust test flew my scratch built 1/4 full scale aeronca champ. The plane weighs 23pounds and is powered by a OS 160 opposed twin swinging aZinger 18X6 @ 7400RPM. Takeoffs are very marginal, Ialmost lost it on the second flight due to a wing stall after takeoff! Once she is airbourne it flys quite well at full and 3/4 throttle. I realize that this plane is way too heavy, but would a different prop give me the little extra I need on takeoff. Thanking All of you guys in advance: Steve

I think the size you have is right, but you may want to try a different brand. I recommend trying a Vess prop, or a good quality wood like that. You're right, you are intensely underpowered. At 23 pounds, a good 50cc gas would give you very scale like performance.

Yeah, I'd ditch the Zinger. Not sure about the weight at 23 lbs though. I have a 1/4 scale Bellanca Citabria that is very close to the same airframe and it weighs 16 lbs now. It did weigh 17lbs and the 1 pound weight reduction made it fly noticably "lighter". Can you do anything to lighten your airplane some?

Try an 18x6-10 Zinger. A friend had a cub with the OS 1.60, and this prop really worked well for him. His plane was not as heavy as yours, but it did make a big difference. The rpms went way down on the ground, but in the air it worked well.

Dear fellow modellers: Thankyou for all your suggestions. I experimented with acouple of different props. Using a fish scale with my 18/6 Zinger prop Iwas able to produce about 91/2 pounds of pull. Next I tried a 18/8 Zinger and was able to get 12pounds! I want to go and get a18/10 and try it. I am thrilled with the extra pull I got with one step up on the pitch facter. I will let you know how the 18/10 prop works out. As of now I 'm pretty confident that the 18/8 prop will do the trick for takeoff. Again thankyou for your help. Steve

Use an APC 18-6 wide blade.

It'll make a significant difference but don't expect to hover!

Or you could put the 160 on steroids by converting it to diesel then you could swing a 20x8 or 20x 10 prop. Then watch the Aeronca get off the ground in 10 feet.
