I am trying to build a plane out of foam and the directions call for a clark airfoil of 15-20%. What would that look like on paper (preferably an easily read and printed version as I am totally new to planes...). Any help would be greatly appreciated as my first plane atempt was sadily a disaster . if you want more information about the design... see this site (it is where I am getting the plans from), Mini T http://www.qnet.com/~skif/plane.html

The Clark-Y airfoil looks like the airfoil that is pictured on the website you linked. Scroll down and it's shown on a side view.

Here is the Clark-Y airfoil.
It is 11.7% thick so I guess the plan you are building from calls for a modified Clark-Y.

First of all, thanks for the images. Secondly I am a litle confused what airfoil the 11.7% in the last link given, I could probabaly use the one suppled to me by the site (just scale it up more...) Mini T

I did find a 15% clark airfoil elsewhere on RCU so I will probabaly use that, if you have any other clark airfoils in the % gap given, it would be great. Mini T

Is there a book or site with all the clark airfoil designs on it as i am a total beginner to the model airplane field??? Also, what makes a clark airfoil different from any other (or is it the same as the others????)

The Clarke `Y' airfoil was designed (one of a whole range of airfoils) by a feller called Clarke. (Think thats the right spelling?). Used by many model designers cause of its apparent ease of building with the bottom half of the wing being basically flat so you can pin it to the building board. Doesn't do anything particularly well, but then doesn't do anything particularly bad either. Its predictability has endeared it to many model flyers and designers over the last 50 years or so. For specific uses there are many better model sections available, but then they have to be built more accurately, or will only work in a smaller range of loadings/speeds etc. You makes you choice...

Thanks for the explination on the clark y pimmnz I was wondering why it was so popular but now I know why is because it is easy to make... Thanks, mini T

Stick with a thickness closer to the 15%. 20% is really too thick for our speeds and the wing would likely have some funny flying charactaristics that you won't get with a 15% version.
