Earlier this week, I had the misfortune to find out that, yes, even I could be hit by internet fraud.

To make a long story fairly short, I stopped at the bank, used the ATM to get some cash, and glanced at the balance. It was low. Way too low. So I went inside and asked for a 'mini statement'.

The nice lady pulled it up and while I was looking at one page, she looked at the second one. When she asked me if I had recently been in Arabia, I nearly choked.

Bottom line: On June 22 of this year, someone charged two airline tickets to my company's check/debit card with Air Arabia, via the internet.

Air Arabia is based in the United Arab Emirates, and doesn't have an office or ticketing place ANYWHERE IN THE USA.

The tickets were to the tune of 1800 bucks. The bank canceled the card immediately and said I'd get my money back. I called the police in Savannah, GA, where I'm working, and a bored cop did the police report. I got the impression he could have cared less. Later in the day, I called the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and got put with an investigator. He was helpful, but said that if the amount was under ten thousand dollars, they really didn't do much about it.

I don't know about most of you, but eighteen hundred dollars is still a lot of money to me, so I'm doing what I can to find out who ripped me off. For what it's worth, Air Arabia has not been forthcoming with any information, at least via EMAIL, so I'm going to send their president a letter via snail mail. I'd really like to nail these *%&#*()@*% to the wall.

I've also found a link to a site that basically lets you submit a crime report to the FBI. If anyone is interested, I'll post the link.

The bottom line, I guess, is that buying even from reputable people on the net isn't safe. All it takes is one employee to throw away a copy of a bill or something, and you're in deep trouble.

I guess 'Caveat Emptor' has a new meaning now...

Gary-
Had the same thing happen to me, but I caught the charge the day after it happened. I called the merchandiser where the charge was made and explained to them what happened. THEY REFUSED TO CANCEL the order even after I explained that it was fraud, and shipped it anyway to an address that they would not reveal to me or the police. My card was cancelled, and my card company refused the charge so the merchandiser had to eat it. The merchandiser? HALLMARK.COM.
Basically I was told by the police investigator that there was nothing that could be done, and that it was up to the card company as to how it would be handled. State laws vary, and yours being outside the country, I wouldn't expect that you will get any further than I did, I'm sorry to say.
I even knew the company that employed the thief that took my card number. Brand new card, only used it once, and the b**** on the other end treated herself to my card number. Still, nothing could be done. This happened a while ago and I still get miffed when I think about it. Bottom line? Make sure you use a credit card with payment protection and NEVER use a debit card to buy over the phone or net.
