scottjones999 -> lipo, charger & esc (7/9/2007 12:46:40 AM)

i have never delt with lipos before only ni-mh (i think, its mn, its not cad but anyway) i am after new lipo and charger and was wondering about brands to go for, and also a brand name for a esc to use with the lipo.
also how different is it to charge lipos compared to other types as i have been reading that they need to be balanced and is there anything else to consider when using them.

thanks
scott.

probably the main thing before much advice can be given is what kind of a setup will you be using, what kind of motor, what kind of performance are you wanting, how much is your buget, ect ect. Also you don't have to get the same brand of charger as the batteries. If they have a different balance lead, you can get adaptor cables and whatever, so the charger is really indepenant of the battery, also so is the ESC. The main thing would be for the charger and the ESC that they are lipo compatible

there are two main types of connectors, the thunder power, or TP connectors and compatible, and the jst balance connectors of which there are 2 polarities, but they can be switched around pretty easily.

as far as other things, make sure you charge them in a fire proof container, and I bring mine inside and let them get down to 80F before I start charging them, which is about 10 or 15 min. Balancing is definately a must like you were saying. One other thing is that lipo's are very senstive to discharge rate. The best advice I have on that is discharge them at most till they read nominal voltage on an open circuit or no load situation. This will leave about 20% in the packs, which is right around where you want to be.

thanks for the advice, i am looking to use it on an RC helicopter, 3200kv motor (around about) and probs a 15a esc, theres lots on ebay but i dont know wich brands to go for as i dont want to get the cheapest, and for budget, not the most expensive but aslong as it will last im not too botherd about the price. when charging batteries dont they have a memory effect like other types of batteries as your supposed to discharge them fully for best life expectancy, would that mean i would have to get a volt meter to test them or do chargers come with this test?

im looking for about a 2200mah battery so a 3 cell lipo.

mrasmm -> RE: lipo, charger & esc (7/9/2007 11:33:43 AM)

you're welcome

not sure on the ESC's, www.commonsenserc.com has some really reasonably priced packs that aren't nearly as liberal with their ratings as some other packs. Like when they say you have a 10c pack, then you have a 10c pack =) Dunno what shipping would be like to the UK though.

As far as the heli, which one is it, the HBK? Alot of people go with the esky for that and have had good luck.

As far as memory, no batteries actually really have that. It's one of the biggest myths in rechargable batteries. Only NiCD's on satelites actually have memory, besides a few other things. RC application though really doesn;t have memory, but as far as lipo's draining them beyond 80% or so will actually ruin them by shortening cycle life. You can actually ruin them completely by discharing them below 2.75v per cell under a load, which could make them kayto on you. Be sure to read the warnings on lipo's before you get one. Some guy in another forum just recently burned down his house with a lipo =(

With a volt meter your pack should run 4.2v per cell fully charged, and about nominal or 3.7v open circuit for an 80% discharge. If you are running less than nominal after you've flown, on an open circuit measurement, you're discharging your pack too far.

here is the link for the guy that burned down his house =(

scottjones999 -> RE: lipo, charger & esc (7/10/2007 7:34:37 PM)

the helicopter is a walkera #36, when i got it i couldnt fly it (severel months ago) i recently took it to a rc model shop and the experts there said that there wasnt enough power for it to take of thus why i am looking for all these new parts and asking questions before i make my purchase.

scottjones999 -> RE: lipo, charger & esc (7/10/2007 7:58:41 PM)

i have found some lipo batterieis on ebay, they mostly seem to be 3e model brand and turborix brand, can these be trusted?

if not then i probably will go with the site provided by mrasmm as it seems to be a good site.

thanks
scott.

I personally am pretty skeptical of batteries on ebay. You have no garentee that they are new, or they haven't been run through cycles, that they are of good quality, or that they will last. You could win, and you could loose. To me it's not worth the gambel, but to others they go ahead with it. It's all up to you and what you are looking for.

scottjones999 -> RE: lipo, charger & esc (7/11/2007 5:03:49 PM)

ok, thanks for the response, i think my last question, is there anyway to find out if the lipos are used or not and the easiest way to test to see if they are what they say they are? thanks so much for the help i apreciate it alot and it has defintaly helped me in my choice

thanks
scott.

mrasmm -> RE: lipo, charger & esc (7/12/2007 12:23:33 AM)

yeah, no prob. There's no real way that I know of if you've got someone who is smart. If they are not smart and the cell voltage isn't at 3.8, there is a good chance they have been used.

mred33 -> RE: lipo, charger & esc (9/2/2007 12:21:00 AM)

I bought some of these batteries from E-Bay and have not had the first problem with them. I charge them like any new batteries I get and run them. I have some that are about 6 months old and they are still going strong. I have one that has about 100 cycles on it and I see no difference in it and a name brand battery I am using. I have never received a bad battery from them, and while they do have a warrenty on them, it has to go back to Hong Kong. I had one ESC that I had a problem with and they took care of it very nicely. I have been very happy with them and plan to buy more. Just make sure that you charg them the right way and I see no reason not to use them right along side the name brand batteries. I always let them cool off first and only charger them at C-1 rate. If I am in a hurry to fly again, I put a different battery pack in, but I never fast charge them. Take care if them like any other battery and they will last a long time.
