I have a Super Tigre G-51 that has very little engine hours. I was in a hobby shop the other day and saw a very nice looking Model Tech Extra 300 .36 size. What do you think of marrying the two up? Is it worth putting a small pretuned pipe on the 51? Am I just going to do a power of mischief to the airframe? Normally I don't buy semi scale or look a likes. I figure manufactures can sacrifice a lot of design features designed to save lives in full scale air craft when making RC models, with gains in weight and performance.

I would love to hear what you all think, including any model recommendations for speed and fun. please, no Vipers or Quickie 500s. And I only do 2 stroke. love the sound and smell. Have an OS .55 AX in a Shadow (smaller version of a Power 3D) and I LOVE it!!

I put a .46 LA engine in the Model Tech Extra 300, and with a 10x7 prop this plane SCREAMS...

The ST-51 will be a bit problematic due to the much larger muffler.

The engine on the MT Extra 300 mounts at a 45 degree angle, head down and the ST muffer will not clear the angled wood area.

While I like the way this plane flies, wheelpants, pilot/canopy area and belly pan are all cheap plastic instead of fiberglass.

The cowl is far too big for the plane and almost seems like it was made for a completely different airplane.

IMHO For the price there are better alternatives.

Thanks for the replies. The models look good, I have never flown a Delta, but I will give it some thought. With regard to the Model Tech and ST 51, what about putting a Jett Stream muffler on it to reduce the size? The ST does have a mighty garbage can strapped to the side where normally a muffler would be on other motors...

I also have a nice pipe and header designed for a 46. The header straps straight on, and if the motor mounts inverted at 45 then it should run nicely down the centre of the aircraft. One more thing, what sort of prop should I be using with a tuned pipe, and how do you tune them?? Will I need a tacho. I am guessing I will need to go to a club and get some help so Idon't chop the header in the wrong place.

I can tell you that bad things happen when you try to make your average aerobatic arf go fast. Things tend to depart the aircraft during flight.

Hughie, I have a ModelTech 300 with a .32SX for power. It's a speedy little plane with this engine. I was able to balance it without adding weights. With a .51 SuperTigre installed, I'm guessing you will have to add some tail weight. It already lands hot. With more weight, it will come in like whistling death.

It's called a Baracuda, but it was a one of a kind scratch built model. It flew really good, and was very fast. It was also stallproof. It landed at about 15-20 mph. It was no good for today's 3d flying. All you could do with it is burn up the sky and make some impressive turns.

I say was because it died one day due to an in flight break up. I flipped it on landing and flew it again without checking it over. I must have weakened the wing and it folded up on me.

No worries, has anyone flown a Weston Magnum 40? they are only 3 channel, can you get them with landing gear and steerable tail wheel or better still a small rudder? Hand launching is the most unattractice form of achieving flight I have ever come across!

What do you think?

There is a couple SPAD version of the Barracuda I've seen that look similar and are blinding fast.

I used to have a Lanier Dominator 500 with Como 61 on it, that I dumb thumbed on a low inverted pass. Flew really fast. Bought it used for $20.

Black Horse Models makes an ARF called the Cobra:

It looks like an ARF version of the Sig Cougar kit, at least in very general design terms. It's designed for fast flight, would be a good fit for the ST .51, and Black Horse Models are supposed to be very good ARFs for the price.

If you can find a Great Panes Patriot .40 kit, it would be perfect. Very fast and very easy to control while going fast. About the only other plane that is a lot more fun to fly at balistic speeds is a GP F-14 with retracts and a OS .91 w/ tuned pipe, but thats another story.

The Ultra Sport does speed pretty well and is also easy to control and is designed to take the Gs. Like what was said before, Extra's are designed to do a lot of flipping and flopping at slow to moderate speeds. When they go to fast, they start to become harder to control and could be torn apart be the stresses.

The .40 sized F-5 Tiger ARFs by VK or Cermark would be good choices too.

Cermark also makes an F-16 and F-18, but again, these need a hot .91 to really curl the hair on the berrries.
