I have a byrons p-51 original I bought it at my local hobby shop it is to just about paint ready.I am curious about (wayne22 comment about it being way off scale) can you go into detail about what is off it would be greatly appreciated as I to was looking forward to this being my first scale masters type project.

oooohhhhhh...this will be from memory, but the stab is the wrong shape, the cockpit and canopy are too far back on the fuselage and the lower cowling shape is off. There is other stuff, but I can't recall it at the moment.

Don't get me wrong, it is one fantastic looking airplane especially with that big 4 bladed prop, and it flies fantastically and realistically. It just won't do well under the scrutiny of a Static Judge. Still you can enter in fun (open) scale and wow them with some fantastic flying...!

Hey BLKmerlin, Who are you? I'm from E.Wenatchee too. Did you buy the Byron P-51 from Gene? I was seriously considering purchasing that plane. Oh, well I have one of my own now. It isn't as complete as yours and needs alot of parts that I will order from Iron bay. Let's get together and discuss this. Glad to see this magnificent bird still taking flight! I found my kit in a similar fashion. The kit was new, in the box with all the accessories. 20 some years after manufacture I've gotten close to finishing it!

Is that yours after finishing it, Kram51? If so, nice job. I am going to do mine in the Quicksilver scheme plus a bit of my own pizzaz!!!!

Anybody know if any of todays engines will plug in where the old Q42 is? I'd like to go a little larger.

The DA50 and DL50 are a lot smaller than the Quadra...No doubt a new mounting plate would have to be machined...but the power and realiability might make a project like this worthwhile in the end......

Yea, the rear induction would probably be nice to have on the 51. I have a new Thor 45, but I don't think that would be enough. Thanks for the feed back.

Would a large gear down brushless motor work in this application. Electric has come a long way.

Sorry, I didn't see this posted right away. Yes, it's mine! I've always wanted one of these things ever since I first saw one as a kid in the 80's.

Keep the 'Stang alive I say! No one else has ever made a workable system for scale prop drives. At least not one that has lasted. Byron did this so many years ago and its amazing with all the advances in engine/motors, props, carbon fiber building techniques, etc. that no one has followed in the Byron footsteps!!

Yes, Kram51, Keep this plane alive. Keep this thread alive too. I still have to build mine and I am not going to get the original landing gear set from Iron bay untill after January. It is going to cost me over 400 dollars. Also I will have an exhaust system built for it through Kelso productions. It will cost 400 dollars too. The paint I will use for it is from Alsa corporation and it is chrome. I will paint mine in the Quicksilver scheme with a flair of my own. I will also put a better cockpit kit in it. I do want to keep the weight down but I also want it to look good. Are these planes usually tail heavy after completion? If so, I will re-work where the radio gear and air can goes.

NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE BALANCE WITH THE ORIG. KITS, THE BAL. COULD BE ACHIVED BY JUST MOVING THE BATTERY PACK. ACTUALLY IF YOU COMPARE THE BYRON MUSTANG TO THE TOP-FLITE OR THE PICA IT IS MORE SCALE. THE TOP-FLITE AND PICA HAD FLAT SIDES WHERE AS THE BYRON FOLLOWS THE CURVATURE A LOT BETTER. THE TAIL CAN BE CHANGED A LITTLE TO MAKE IT MORE SCALE BUT THEN AGAIN STILL BETTER THEN TOP-FLITE OR PICA. ACTUALLY TODAY THE ONLY LARGE MUSTANGS THAT HAVE A BETTER SCALE OUTLINE ARE AERO-TEC, ZIROLI OR THE COMPOSIT. HERE ARE A FEW PICTURES OF MY OLD BYRON, I'AM ABOUT TO REFINSH IT FOR THE 3RD TIME, STILLS FLYS GREAT. I ALSO HAVE ONE OF THE NEWER KITS WITH THE 2 PIECE WING THAT I'AM GOING TO BUILD SOON AND MAKE IT SOME WHAT COMPETETIVE. FIND OUT WHAT ENG. IS IN YOURS IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENC. ALSO YOU DO NOT WANT TO GO TO LARGE ON THE ENG. THE BLADES WON'T TAKE IT THEY WILL BEND AND ALSO THE REDUCTION UNIT WAS NOT MADE FOR TO MUCH POWER ANYTHING FROM A QUAD 50 ON UP WILL REQUIRE BEEFING UP THE DRIVE UNIT. ANY QUES. JUST ASK

Really nice plane, Bob. I wish that mine was that complete. Are you using a starter on your plane? I noticed the wear on the spinner. What starter do you use?
Unfortunately, I think that the motor I have with mine is a Quad 35. I wish that it was a 45. The paperwork that came with my plane suggests that. The 50 wasn't even available when my plane was made. The numbers on the bottom of the engine say 81 so it was made in 1981 I think. I have alot of work to do. I do not think that it will be done by May. That is my goal though.

Does anyone have any video or know where any video is on this plane running and flying? I have searched every nook and cranny on the web for that and only found one video on this and it was good but the guy that posted it drowned out all of the sound of the plane and engine with music. What a bummer!!!!!! Good video but music at wrong timing on this subject is not really that good.
