Hi BlkMerlin,

Sorry, I havent seen any in a while. Most of those guys are doing other things now and those planes are long gone.

It was sort of a case of "Dueling Wallets" as it were. Each guy was trying to out do the other with the biggest , baddest model or the most gadgets you could have on the flight line.

I was sort of the engine guy and help them get the beast running. It was well beyond my budget to have those types of models but, the guys from time to time needed help keeping them flying or sorting out teething problems and so I helped out.

It was fun

Carlos G.

[quoteI am using 2 hs125mg(50oz @ 6volts) wing servos for the elevator mounted in the elvator surface ][/quote]

Those servos are way too small for a giant scale vibrating p-51. The gear teeth are microscopic and it will not take much to break a few of them off. go bigger....much, much bigger.

This Mustang was originally built with the direct drive and a G62. It was probably 8 - 10 years old when I got it from a friend of mine. It flies like a trainer @ 25 pounds. No tendancy to nose over once I got the hang of flying a taildragger (all my other warbirds were trike gear: P-39, F-4, T-38). I flew it with the same Zinger 20X8-14 prop for a couple of years. Most takeoffs were accomplished with about half thottle and then a smooth transition to full. It slows down real well with the flaps. I never tried to 3 point land it, just set down reasonably slow on the mains and then let the tail come down.

I sold it 6 or 7 years ago but had the opportunity to buy it back a couple of years ago. It is not in flying shape and I have been too busy with work and other projects to restore it to flying condition. It needs quite a bit of work and lots of new retract parts. Servos are probably the original units installed when it was built (Futaba S-148s all around). Hopefully 2008 will be a better year for my RC hobby and I'll get it and my 1/5 scale P-39 flying again.

Bkmerlin1, How close are you to paint? Call me when you decide to fly it. I am a long way to finish. Right now, I don't even have the retracts or the gear pants!! But, I do have ideas on how to get the stuff. It will take weeks though now not months. I heard that our planes are really loud, so it is a good thing that our field is where it is huh?

Jeff, I have an old set of retracts for the early style one piece wing. They are air up, spring down, with the old control valve and I also have the inner and outer aluminum halves of the gear doors. Let me know if you are interested. Here's some pics of my old style one piece wing before and after the aileron linkage failed, and my new style plug in wings. Hoping to maiden it this summer.

First post here..

I have an unbuilt Byron as well..well its time for the meat and potatoes part..

Im considering (more or less decided really) a DA50 with scale exhaust..Im not a big fan of the visible head..

Also Ive noticed that alot of the Byrons have a "nose high tail low" stance...not sure how that correlates to the real airplane, but as my kit doesnt have any landing gear, Im going with Sierra Precision, for mains/tail as well as tires/rims..

Other then some nice details/finishing touches (full cockpit, body fairings, scale exhaust, detailed wheel wells, DA 50, etc...) Ill build it per plans, although I think Im going to mount the aileron servos outboard in the wing..not fan of that tube rail thing..

I am having trouble reaching Iron Bay..Not sue if its the holidays or what..Id like to incorporate a sliding canopy but not sure of anyone other then I B that makes one for that kit/canopy..

I emailed and asked if they had parts available and he said send him part #'s and that they had all the repro parts so I would say yes.

I sent John at Iron Bay an E-mail and haven't heard back from him....Over a week now. As far as part #'s his web site won't let me down load the pages needed.
If anyone has an unbuilt kit they want to sell let me know.

thanks bob
