Scratch is more expensive than an equal kit ?

Com'on.........price it out. You can scratch for a fraction of kit cost...and control wood quality and precision as well.....Ziroli is the master of designing an airplane that will FLY ...and still retain reasonable scale accuracy. Hands down.
Time? So , after tracing patterns..you spend , maybe , an additioinal two or three days cutting parts ( cumulatively)...no big deal - if you're really a builder in the first place !

Two or three days, cutting wood? I don't know about you fellas, but I have other interests and demands beside model building. If I can eliminate two to three days of a chore that has nothing to do with how accomplished a builder I am, I will gladly fork over the $20-$30 and use the two days working on the model's finish and detailing.

(Just my .02 worth!)

Well......Some of us consider cutting wood part of the hobby and as you probably know several kit cutters will do the cutting for you. One gentleman told me it is more economical to have your balsa,plywood etc. cut by one of the kit cutters as oppossed to selecting and then cutting your own,. NOW if I had three extra days what would I do with them........

It MIGHT take you two or three evenings to cut the wood. Maybe one afternoon. It depends on the plane, the modeler, and his workshop setup. I would definitely say that it does have something to do with how good a modeler you are.
It will definitely save you much more than 20 or 30 dollars. The Taylorcraft I built from MAN plans cost me under $50 in wood. Where are you going to get a 1/4 scale Taylorcraft kit for 80 bucks?
The P-47 I'm building now has maybe $80 worth of wood in it, maybe another 30 or 40 spent by the modeler who cut the ribs and formers. The kit from a cutter cost in the neighborhood of $400, and that's before you buy the glass cowl and canopy.

Jim Keel has plans for a 80" span Komet.
Sal Calvagna the columest for giant scale in Model Aviation has built one and it flys like a patern ship. He is in my club on Long Island and is very helpfull.
Check the magazine for his E-mail address and zap him a line. He has all the info on Jim Keel and can set you up.
I'm scratch building a Tempest now and all you need is a scroll saw and then buy the canopy and cowling parts. Cuting out all the parts took me about 3 days, not a big deal when you look at the big picture of building a plane.
As far as a favorite twin, I'v been itiching to build a Heinkel 111 at 90" span.
The mosquito is a great second choice. I have a 82" Dehaviland Chipmunk and a Beaver on Floats. The Mosquito would go with the flow. I saw a Mosquito at the WRAM show by Giant Scale Planes in 72" span. Really nice, but a little to small. Be nice if Top Flight came out with a giant scale kit.

Hey Frank, It's Gunny, I think TF should build a 1/5 scale razor back "jug" P-47 ARF. Actually the ARF's should also be ofered in ARC versions also.

Well just my 0.02 worth how about an A-26 or maybe a B-24 or even a P-38. I think these would be a wonderful addition to TF. Or even the P-82 with maybe and 84" wing span

The A-26 is a great twin. The C version is my favorite American twin bomber.
I looked at the Don Smith plans which are very nice, but I would like to keep it in the 80 to 90 inch size. The glass nose realy makes it, but would be tough to do. I tried vacume moulding a couple of times & find it is a lot of work making the plug.

I would also like to see a K-61 Hien or a Ki-84. Both have classic lines and round wingtips (don't know why but I love round wing tips) I'd say skip the Zero, there are a ton of those out there already.

agree with you kram51

I have the TF P40 and it is a lovely plane to fly and with a JR gyro on bord the narrow tract gear causes no problems at all - it is mixed to retracts so when gear is up gyro is off so it does not fight you in aileron only turns.

I had asked TF sometime back when they did a survey of what modellers wanted and I asked for a GS Zero and P40. Mind you there is a fibergalss one here in Oz I can pick up for about $450 AUD with foam cores and 95" wingspan so will go with that in the near future. Not a lot in the kit though so you have to be prepared to a do a bit of work and use the grey matter.

Other plane I would love TF to kit in the GS size is the Hurricane. It really is a most delightful plane to model, big thick wing, wide track undercarriage and it's only vice is that the horizontal stab and elevator and atad small which on the real size led to pilots running out of elevator on landing.

oh somebody was on about TF doing a mossie. Ok lovely plane and I'd love one but to make one to say even 100" would require a huge box and major resellers in the US such as Tower wont stock that big a box as they can not ship economically and as for overseas orders forget it, they can't even ship the 1/7th scale birds o/s
