I am working on the F-18, has anyone had to cut the wheel openings any larger so the wheels will not rub as they go up?

I had to enlarge one side just a hair so the wheel wouldn't hit on the way up....and one side had to shim up the retract so the wheel retracted fully.

Loose elevator (stab)

Found the solution to the loose in the elevator. As I mentionned before on the previous page i noticed a 1/64th loose on the shaft in the plastic groomet on the stab which resulted in approximately 1/8 inch play at the trailing edge of the elevators. This is not good and cannot be overlooked for the reasons mentionned in the previous page and will inevitably cause a failure to this critical foil.

THE SOLUTION: is a 11/32nd brass tube, JB Weld and a 3/8 brass tube fron KS engeenering. 1st, you cut a 2 7/8 inch lenght out of the tubes. 11/32 amd 3/8 then you apply JB weld to the 2.7/8 inch on the stab shaft and insert the 11/32 to the shaft of the elevator and let it glue on it. This will eliminate the slightest loose between the shaft and the brass tube. You then drill through the plastic groomets with a 3/8 size drill. You then take a heat gun heat up the plastic groomets and insert the 3/8 inch tube . It definitely needs to be heated because the 3/8 tube will be too tight to enter the 3/8 hole and it needs to be that way.... Once this is done, you let the JB Weld dry overnight, go to sleep and the next day you insert the stab in your new bushing and there is not a newborn child hair loose in there. Nothing is loose and moves freely on this new brass bushing system. It takes a few hours, will cost no more than 5$ and this will never cause flutter unless your linkage needs to be revised.

BTW unlike the normal poeple who use a heat gun to peel off paint, I purchased a heat gun to heat up the engine head to start my planes in the winter! @ -10F / -25C...

Guys..

First time i write on this Forum, I got My F-18, I used to have an F-4 that was a bullet, and decided to go the next step, (Before Jets..LOL). For those of you who like to add some scale like features to your Model, I have added a cockpit to my F-18 I'll add pictures soon.

Guys

As I promised, here are some pictures of my F-18's Cockpit, as I mentioned before this is an ALTIERY's Plastic Cockpit Kit that Fits pretty good on Cermark's F-16 & F-18, it will add some scale attitude to the Fast Pro-jet. You can buy the Kit at TowerHobbies for like $40. there are some adjustments that need to be done, but it looks pretty good. Take a look.. And let me know what you guys think.

That's a nice looking cockpit. In the interest of saving money (and weight) I built mine in my F-16 using balsa wood and some photos. Added a hanger 9 jet pilot bust and it didn't turn out too bad. Here's a couple of photos.

OS says the max practical rpm on a 120AX (I assume that's what you're talking about since I didn't see any other OS 1.20's) is 9,500 and they recommend a 14x10 or 15x6 prop. That doesn't sound like the right kind of engine for a prop jet. I use a Magnum .91 XLS which has a max practical rpm of 15,000. That's about what I'm turning it in the air with a 12x6 APC. It's cheap, fast enough for me, and I can fly for 10 minutes. And so far, so good...

If it blows up or I get bored, I'll stick my Jett 90L in it..

I have an OS 1.20 AX, and it would not be a good engine for a prop jet. It is tuned to put out excellent low end power through the use of a relatively small carb and porting. It almost feels like a four stroke, and actually pulls the larger props with athority. With the right prop I imagine it would fly the plane, but it would not get the type of speed needed to make it look impressive. Every effort also has to be made to minimize the nose weight, and the 1.20 is a bit heavier than most of the .91 size engines (30 oz. with muffler compared to 26 oz. for the Jett).

Perhaps you are correct.....
The weight that you see is incorrect, as the muffler is not as heavy as posted....
My muffler is shaved thin and weighs little...... I had thought about use of a tuned muffled pipe/header.....

And yes the 9500rang is very simular to a 4-stroke........
But I have seen some very very fast 4-strokes on GP little toni's that have handidly beat the .90 2 stroke......

I am sure that it can be proped correctly,,,, but I do see where you are going with this!!...

This may cause me to rethink my use of a 1.20 AX on the GP minnow w/a tuned pipe!....
My way of thinking is that "2-stroke + more RPM's = more power and speed" But I think that I will get minimal increase in speed when comparing to a .90 Jet engine!...
Probly doesn't compare....

I just finished putting the retracts in my F-16. But the front retract doesn't come down all way. I even put 100psi in the system and it just doesn't come down. If I give it a nudge it will lock down in place. Any ideas?

I even took out the in-line "air throttle" on the front retract.

The gear that came with mine were binding and wouldn't extend freely. I found that the aluminum plates weren't bent at 90 degrees as they should be.

The air makes them go up; springs make them come down. So, more air won't help. I use 100 psi in mine.

Does everyone feel safe about the one little screw that holds the vertical fins in place? I don't really trust it myself.
