Hey guys, since all of you use epoxy to fix or rebuild I decided to place this topic here.

I always has use epoxy glue without any problem.

Yesterday I was doing a small fixing to my son airplane to be ready for sunday. When I was looking for my ZAP 30 min epoxy I notice that the hardener was a little harder inside the container so I put the glue container for 10 second on the microwaive so if soften.

I mix it with the resin, fix the airplane and then clean my hand with alcohol as always.

Today morning I fill a itching in my hands and in my head.

I remember this same hapend to me last weekend using same epoxy so thats why I think I have some allergic to the epoxy glue or to this glue I am using.

Have any of you has experience the same? Could it be possible that this epoxy is old and thats why this happend? Any advise?

Thx

Isaac

Where Latex Gloves... like the ones Medical Doctors use, while working with that stuff. The more we use Epoxy the more we start having reactions to it. What you are going through is normal after a long period of use.

Hope I helped,

good suggestion, but watch him end up with latex allergy next. me mum's a nurse and developed a latex allergy after years of wearing latex gloves. she can wear the nitrile gloves now, but says that if she is even in a room with someone else wearing them or touches anything latex (which is about half the equipment in a hospital) then she has a pretty severe reaction.

just for gee whiz info, this is called becoming "sensitized" to something. it can happen with a large variety of substances.

epoxy is cheap why in the world would you even think of putting epoxy in the microwave. if anything were to give you a reaction in the epoxy it would be all the stuff that's released when heated.
I just confirmed that with my wife who has been an RN for years.

In the composites industry that type of reaction is called "contact dermatitis"...

I'm 41 years of age, and I've used Latex Gloves and haven't had a problem. I don't use gloves every day, the chemicals in AP is more corrosive to the skin than Latex Gloves.

It all depends on the persons immune system. You can read all the books in the world, but it won't make you smarter than the person with that experiance.

I have a similar problem with CA glues. I expreemented with brands and types and found one that doesn't affect me. In the case of CA I believe it was the solvent base that caused the problem.

GREAT advise!!!! I too had ichy hands about 2 or 3 days after using Epoxy and my skin would start peeling on my finger tips and on my palm after using CA...... Nitrite gloves works very well at isolating my hands from the exposure of the chemicals....AND I don't have to use my alcohol to clean my hands. Our health is VERY important and I would encourage EVERYONE to use gloves now BEFORE you get sensized to the chemicals we use.

Isn't hardened CA on the fingertips peeling off normal? It happens to everyone I know that uses CA...If you can feel your fingertips then you haven't been building enough planes.

I know this is an old post but i ran across it and thought I would add my two cents. Here goes......
I have been building and flying RC for many years and suddenly back in 2003 I started getting a nasty rash on my four arms (left and right) and hands. This quickly jumped up to my neck and then face.... nothing in between. Man did it itch, doped up on benedryl and wiped down with clear vinager. helped for a bit.... finally after feeling like i was going to die from it I went to an allergy specialist and had MANY test run and found out that I was sensitive to all epoxy (hardener to be specific...) the fumes alone would give me a horrible out burst of the rash. The doctor put me on a steroid pack and BOOM the thing was gone in about two to three days on a seven day pack of steroids. Had this confirmed by messing with epoxy a couple of more times and boom, out burst, got steroid pack and gone each time. Because of this I have had to get out of building and practically flying all together. I finally bucked up and went out and got my Private Pilots License so I could atleast enjoy aviation still in a more costly capicity. This is a VERY condensed version of what all i went through. I almost had to have a career change as I work in the avaition industry and was prone to be around all manners of sealants and epoxies. It actually took about two and a half years to figure it out with doctors and all the test. Trust me, If you continue to break out, It will get worse the more you break out (odds are). Go see a doc and have a patch test done for allergies and get a steroid pack.....if the low dose doesnt work make them give you the higher dose... I had to as I have a high tolerance to most drugs. But I now know my limits with this stuff and STAY AWAY from it at all cost. Again, I know this is an old post but I went through this mess for years before help and thoguht I would give you a direction from some one that has been there.... It got sobad with me that I could go into a room where someone had used epoxy 30 mins before and still break out from the fumes....but everyone is different.....Good Luck....Hope this helps.

- Russ
