Hi Kirk,
Are you going to make it to the Havok over Hamilton this year?

No, I don't think so. I considered it, but for various reasons, I'm going to go elsewhere this year. I might show up in 2005, not sure yet.

Any chance of any of you guys from that area showing up here at Mid-Atlantic Championships?

I will have to check my calendar. I believe Jay Frohm (Sp?) makes it to about every combat event he can. I will try to make it this year. It is always fun to fly at different fields than what you are used to.

Hay CaptinHowdy,
I found a solution for that and hope it is not considered a mod. I removed the clip and set it up in a vise. With a Diamond burr bit chucked up in a Dermal tool. I created two holes, one in each of the clip ears just big enough to use safety wire in. After pipe install safety wire and use safety wire pliers to do the twist. (It's a cheap tool.). I have had two hard impacts after brain fades (I ran out of Alt., Airspeed, and Ideas, all at the same time) and the pipe stayed with the engine. As to the pipe seal and trying to get the stinking little o-ring'S to stay in during pipe install, Norvel service recommended using one o-ring and high temp permatex. This works great.

Can you take a picture of that Norvel .15 muffler mount arrangement?

Sure I'd be glad too. I have 4 Norvel engines and one of them hit the dirt a few week ago. I have not separated it from the debris and will be a good example. I'll get the pix later today. I'm back with the pix. Don't laugh (too loud) at whats left. It was a tenacious pile-in. The wing didn't get a scratch.

My choice of a stock 15 would be the thunder tiger gp. This motor runs the same as the magnum 15 and is much more durable. (Im talking about the newest motor that comes in a red box)

Do you have RPM numbers with various props for the TT GP ? The guys I know who have tried them, and worked on them to get max RPM have all come to the conclusion that the TT just does't keep up with the Magnum .15 or OS .15LA. (The Mag I'm referring to is the current XL line, a BB motor, not their old bushing engine)

I happen to like the Mags, but it's really not hard to be more durable than the Mag .15XL . The mag has a front bearing that can eat dirt (though I've not had that problem, others have), and the carb mounting on the crankcase on the Mag is a bit weak (I've broken two of them, but it's repairable with JB Weld, and I'm now reinforcing my unbroken ones with JB weld to try to prevent this from happening).

So far, it still seems like the TT is a bit under-powered in SSC legal form.

When you break the carb mount, what are the circumstances of the crash. (mid-air, contact with ground at top speed, contact with ground at landing speed, you got center punched?)

The Mag carb is a draw-bar style mount. The break is almost always caused by something (ground, another airplane, whatever) hitting the carb straight on from the front. The carb rotates backwards and pops the front of the mounting out, I think. It's also possible that the carb is breaking the mount in a sudden stop though it's momentum. Here's a picture of a fixed engine. As you can see, the JB weld is reinforcing the front of the carb mount (in this case, holding it in place). Both times I've had it break, the origional metal was still there, just cracked, so I could use JB weld to glue the origional part back in place, then add the reinforcement you see here:

With all this talk about the norvel 15 being the lightest 15 out there. Exactly how much does it weigh with the muffler?

The new magnum 15 XL ran a apc 7/5 at 16000 RPM with no mods on 15% fuel. The new thunder tiger 15 gp with the same prop and fuel got the same 16000 rpm. Making modifications so that each motor would run an apc 7/5 19000 rpm and then allowing them to make 3 flights ea. and allowing the motor to unload in the air. They were torn down and checked. No wear was noted in thunder tiger 15. The magnum 15 wrist pin was worn so much that it had its diameter reduced 1/2 where it was in contact with piston. Every motor has its limit and the thunder tiger after further test running as high as 23000+ is still going strong. The magnum is in need of a new piston and pin. NOTE: The magnum runs good as a stock motor and this stress test was performed only to see what engine could be modified for high rpms without breaking something. I only wish that the thunder tiger used chrome plating like the magnum does.

Are you saying that after only 3 runs the wrist pin was worn 1/2 thru? I would think the port timing would be getting so far off it wouldn't run anymore. What modifications were you making?
