great.. looks like she's sailing ok.. oh, about the turnbuckles. jaelon have a point, isn't turnbuckles a bit overkill for the monsoon? i mean if you don't need to spend extra couple of bucks why not settle with just dowsies?

Larrykin, can you give the link to your hobby shop for the turnbuckles? ............. and where do you sail your yachts, not far from fairfield.
any help is needed.
cheers

I sail at Lake Chipping Norton, near Warwick Farm. I've reread my post about using Rigging Screws / Turnbuckles. On an inexpensive boat like yours wire trace with rigging screws is probably too much. I doubt the mast, deck or fittings could take the forces. Would wind up bending, snapping the mast or ripping out the sidestay deck cleats. Or worse... driving the mast thru the hull.
Instead, get some decent line.  Braided Dacron or Spectra and use bowsies. DO NOT BUY the thin braided line. You want the old fashioned thick stuff.
This is a link to the only shop I've found that sells parts for RC Yachts in Australia. They have a catalogue you can download as a PDF.
NOTE: I don't own a hobby shop. Suggest you get a packet of bowsies from this place and  Dacron fishing line from any fishing tackle shop.

also would it be better to leave the jib a little loose near the mast to catch  wind, and same with mainsail ,but at rear of the boom?
or leave them tight ?

You're talking about outhaul. That's the setting of the sail's draft (curvature). Tight for strong winds, curved for light. To do that you need outhaul adjustment on your booms. And the answer is yes - definitely! In light winds increasing the sails draft will catch more wind and the boat will sail faster. In strong winds sails need to be tight as possible to catch less wind and sail better to windward. Very important to get the sails, jib and main, curvature to match. Rule of thumb - have enough draft in light winds to just fit your fingers in between the sail and boom.

JIB UPHAUL - easy upgrade mod. Place a new line with a bowsie from your mast jibstay point (at top where the jib sheet connects to the mast) to your jib foot (jib boom at very end near mast). In light winds you can lift the jib boom to increase draft. Opposite in strong wind. The Boom Vang is similar on the main.

Happy sailing and upgrading.
Larry L.

Hi LarryKin,
I know this is a bit of an old thread, but thought it worth letting everybody know of another good supplier in Aust I have used is Float A Boat in melb.
link is http://www.floataboat.com.au/
Much cheaper than Radio yachts. eg I have bought threaded brass turnbuckles 2 for $10.50 inc GST for my Mini40 and Volvo from them. I agree with your advise, but would still put them on Monsoon for main stays, good boat bling! Also do working blocks cheap. Catalogue of website, not quite as much range as RYA you mentioned.

Ps I am in no way whatsoever related to F.A.B, just happy customer.
cheers and hope this helps any other downunder modelers.
cheers

Hi:
Larrykin, with the line you mentioned to be instaled between the jibstay attachment point to the mast down to the rear end of the jib boom, you set the TWIST on the jib, allowing more or less air to escape from the upper half of the sail, the same efect has the boom vang for the mail sail.

The draft or curvature should be done adding or diminishing the distance beteewn the jib attachment points to the boom.

Stay well

That's what I said. Outhaul. Adjusting the sails clew along the boom to either flatten or increase curve in the sail. The jib uphaul is for twist, yes, BUT will also add curve to the jib's foot. I personally don't use this uphaul line. Tried it but found it useless.

Have a look at my boat sailing. Also if you look close you can see everything on my boat re rigging. Turnbuckles etc.

Hi all,im a keen r/c yacht and REAL yacht sailor!
I found the monsoon on ebay and Iam up to my 13th boat now (im the buyer for my buddies so we are not bidding against each other) what started off as just 4 of us is now 13 and and climbing!we have races at least twice a week, at night down at our local rockpool and have loads of fun,we also take them down to our yacht club and sail them after a race on the yachts at the marina, good for ****s and giggles!
I generally mod. them for everyone but keep them basic so as to keep it cheap and close!
firstly i replace the rigging with spectra fishing braid (dynema) its about 80lbs and cost me about $100 for 300meters.
then i chop the threads down on the keel rod so it doesnt protrude past the deck or the ballast bulb!
then using silicon i fill the recess in the bulb and tighten the nut untill the excess squeezes out and then wipe off excees.
Then i fill the hole in bottom of the bulb with silicon too, when it has hardened i trim excess of with a sharp blade like a box knife etc!
i dont bother with the standard hatch i use "contact" (film for covering school books etc)looks like cling wrap but sticky,i bought a 5mx 500mm roll of it for about $3 (lots of waterproof hatch covers there)and just have a heap precut!
The rudder slop i took up by wrapping some plumbers thread tape around the rudder shaft until i was happy with the fit.

i sail expensive int. one meters and marbleheads but find these little boats fantastic value for money and great for what we are using them for

with the rigging replacement, what did you use to tension the rigging? thinking of doing the same as well.

Aloha Fellow sailors!

I took my new Monsoon 900 out for its maiden voyage yesterday...10 to 15 knots in Waiakea Pond...just west of Hilo International Airport if you want to see it on Google Maps. It seems that Shunbo has listened to past comments about the boat, as mine came with some good non-stretch black line for the shrouds, and the bowsies hold them nice and tight...my mast held extremely well yesterday and allowed me to make adjustments to the mast rake until I got my weather helm just slightly there. The boat held its own against some drastic gusts (20 knot trade winds are the norm in Hawaii), not really unlike any other boat I've seen in videos. I DID absolutely fill the keel bulb with 57 ounces of small lead shot though, and I think others who've felt the boat is too wimpy in high winds may not have put enough weight in the keel.

At any rate, I'm looking forward to testing her against the many other boats sailed in the pond on Saturdays. I'll send along photos of my Monsoon and the other boats sometime soon. Overall, my first impression is very good...especially for the price...only US $180 plus $10 for the lead and $5 for some weatherstrip door seal for the hatch. And $59 for trackable express shipping and insurance is very reasonable! I have not been disappointed.

Aloha!
