Had a little fun today...

Great Planes Mini Delta
E-flite Park 370 inrunner (4100kV)
Electrifly 12A controller
E-flite 800mAh 7.4V li-po (from Blade CX)
Futaba S3114 servos
DX7 and AR6100

~7oz. flying weight.

With the drilled stock prop I'm pulling about nine amps, which puts me at ~147W/lb.

Removed the stock motor mount and made one for the Park 370 from ply and epoxied it in place.

Stock prop was drilled to fit the E-flite collet. Since the threads on the collet didn't allow me to fully tighten on the prop, I used an extra insert from an APC prop and drilled it to fit the collet then tightened it down.

Had to cut a channel in the nose to flush mount about 1.2 oz. of lead, added another .25oz in the center of the canopy.

Flies nice, here's a vid.

Wife had a hard time following the thing.

Not bad for a ~7 oz., 19 in. wingspan delta in 16 MPH winds.

At 1/4 throttle on that pack she flies nice, not too fast. Very controllable.

Giving it more throttle picks up the speed a good bit but from 3/4 to full throttle there's no real speed increase...just more noise.

Fun plane to fly. Made a few passes in front of me about waist high off the ground and climbed out. Fun stuff.

7.4V 800mAh pack gave me a flight time of 12:36 before li-po cutoff kicked in.

Now to find my small 11.1V (Blade CP) pack.

Sweet man! I am doing something similar. I am going to use a lower kv motor and a 3s with a different prop....not sure which one yet. I will test a few. I used 2 quarters and a penny to balance it. Looks funny but is functional. Try a better prop for more noise and speed.

Yup, stock prop isn't cutting it.

What prop did you end up going with?

I bought my Mini Delta a few days ago and had a great maiden flight with the stock engine, a 3cell Lipo and 30 cents worth of change to balance. Flight weight was at 6.85 ounces.

On the second flight the motor fell off presumably because fo the heat.

I'm planning on replacing the motor and mount.

Jason

Where did you get the lead weights? I put a small brushless outrunner on mine and 100 grams of NIMH 9.6V as far forward as I could.

So has anyone made a Mach machine out of one of these yet? I ended up putting a 3500kv motor on mine with 3s lipo and a APC prop of which I cannot remember it's size and pitch. It screamed out of my hand....did a torque roll and ended up planting itself. I bought another one and it is still in the box new...for the last year. Winter is upon us and projects are on my mind. This plane is one of them. I know it can go FAST! Any info of what you guys have tried would be great.

No one did this? I may have to get something kickin soon as I get back from hunting trip.

This plane is big fun for a small wing. Getting it so I can see it when it rips by is gonna be the biggest challenge. Might try streamers on the wing tips..

I have one of these coming. I plan to set it up with a 2650Kv motor with an APC prop and 3s 610mAh Li-Po. I'm interested to see how it all works. I'm not really looking for it to break speed records, but a little speed would be nice

It's been a while but I'll answer anyway, maybe your still wondering. leigh018, I believe the Mini Super Cub has an integrated ESC/Receiver/Servos, so it would be very difficult to make it work in the Mini Delta. I don't think you'd have very good luck making it work.

Got my mini delta tonight. Started setting it up and ran into trouble with my prop adapters. I bought two because I know it's the little things that hang you up. Well, one doesn't fit any of my props, the other is noticeably crooked and causes the prop to be off balance. I did a little testing with the off balance one and I will either drill my props to fit the larger one, or buy another (I'm not going to fly with the one that is off balance). I have a 5.5x2 APC prop I cut down to 4.5 and it seemed to have the most thrust of the ones I tried, though with the low pitch it would likely be the slowest. I also tried a 4.1x4.1 APC as well as the stock prop.

I am using a 2650kv 20x30mm Ammo inrunner motor with 3s Li-Po. All the props drew around 7 amps or so at full throttle. I'm using an E-flite 10 Amp ESC and I mounted it outside the fuselage right in front of the servos so it would be able to get good airflow. My AR6000 receiver doesn't fit very well, but I'll come up with something.

The weather is supposed to be pretty poor for at least a few days, so I won't likely get to try it out for a while, even if I get a new prop adapter this weekend.

Well, it's been almost a month and I figured I'd update my experience with the Mini Delta. Unfortunately the speed caught me off guard and I had a less than successful first flight. It got so far away so fast that I couldn't tell which way it was facing and I ended up nose-diving it at high speed. The motor shaft bent and the foam airframe was basically completely destroyed, but I wasn't ready to throw in the towel on this model. The brief flight was fast and exciting.

I ordered another, along with a Hyperion 2250kv outrunner that weights 17.5 grams. It's a perfect match for the plane and is so light that no added weight is needed in front to balance the model (my original setup needed a bit of weight up front). I also went with an AR6100 receiver which was a much better fit. As with the first try I cut off the elevons and re-attached them with 3M Blenderm tape, though this time I also put a small carbon rod in each elevon to stiffen them up for more crisp control at high speeds.

I finally got a chance to take it out this weekend. I used a 4.5x4 prop which drew around 9 amps static. The plane is an aboslute blast! I had many successful flights with it and it is a great flying plane. It flies straight as an arrow and will climb straight up as far as I can see. It is a completely different flying experience than my other planes. It is fast, but very controllable and amazingly stable, even in wind.

The most surprising thing is how easy it is to land. It slows down nicely, and when it gets low and slow enough I just cut the throttle and pull up on the elevator and it just sets down gently. After the first landing I wondered if it was just lucky, but each landing after that was just as smooth and uneventful.

The only issue I had was during one launch I must have messed up, or my fingers slipped or something (I never figured out exactly) but it basically stood straight up and stalled. It probably would have been fine if I had just cut the throttle and let it drop (it was about eye level). But I though if I punched the throttle it might just pull out. But it didn't, and all I got for my attempt was a broken prop and motor mount. I was anxious to keep flying so a less than pretty hot glue fix (took about 2 minutes) and a new prop and I was back in the air and it flew fine. The only issue was that thrust angle was a bit off (I think) because it took a bit of up elevator trim for level flight after that.

Not a total speed demon, but still very fast and fun. Flies well (including fairly steep climbs) at half throttle, with full throttle only needed for straight up rocketing climbs and high speed passes.

I can post some pictures if anybody is interested, complete with motor mount repairs .

Nobody else seems to be posting about this plane. I just thought I'd throw in another update. I got in some more flying time with the Mini-Delta Easter weekend. It was terribly windy. I wanted to fly, but there was no way any of my other planes would handle the wind and still be any fun to fly. I figured I'd give the Mini-Delta a try. I tossed it into the wind and it rocketed away, barely affected by the wind. When going into the wind at low throttle the back would wiggle just a tad, but it still flew straight and true and had no problems at all. I really was amazed at how well it handled the wind, considering how light it is.

At the last flight of the day I had a mishap. There wasn't really a good place to land at my friends farm, so I was litterally landing in a field that was rough, plowed dirt. It wasn't really a problem because with wind I could land fairly slow and it basically stopped the moment it touched down. However, on the last landing I was coming in a bit faster than the previous times and I was going to pull out and come back around but I figured it would be fine. It slid a bit after touchdown and would have been fine, but a rock cought the motor mount and broke it free on one side. Wouldn't have been a big deal, I would have just thrown some glue on it and it would have been good as new. But the wind blew my jacket into the throttle stick on the way back to the garage and the motor screamed (with a busted mount) and the prop destroyed center verticle fin, and broke the mount the rest of the way off. I shut the throttle off almost imediately though, so nothing else was damaged (the prop and prop-saver rubber band were even fine).

So I repaired the motor mount, and replaced the center fin with a piece of depron. I also added a couple small pieces of wood in the back to help protect the motor/mount for that happening again.

Here are a couple pictures just for the heck of it. Anybody else still have interest in this plane? It's a blast to fly.

Here's mine:

It isn't fresh from the box anymore, but it still flys great! Actually, it's my first plane (other than a sail plane I flew years ago). I've only got about a dozen flights on the Mini Delta and I already have the basics down. It's a lot more durable and easier to fly than I thought it was going to be. I agree this thing is a blast and is by far the best money I've spent on R/C in years. I just hope it doesn't get discontinued any time soon! So, for now I'm waiting to see how long the stock motor lasts on a 3S LiPo and have been looking into brushless motors to get prepared. Any suggestions? It looks like it would need a 20mm x 30mm motor, but I have no idea what KV to get. Can I still use the stock prop with a brushless? I was thinking of just pushing it on using the same diameter shaft as the stock motor.
