I just bought a Quest 50 and I am confused by the firewall markings. There are 2 sets of lines horizontal and vertical. They are cut through the firewall (you can see light). How do I line up my engine? Why are they cut through? Should I seal them? Why are they off center?

I don't have the Quest 50 but when I built the Giles 202 and it also had two vertical lines. As far as I remember, you should line up the mark on the engine mount with the mark on the rigth when you are looking at the firewall ( actually the left side of the airplane ). Since the firewall usually has an angle for side thrust, that should bring the the tip of the engine shaft pretty much inline with the left mark (normally the center of the fuselage). My aircraft do not have two horizontal lines but your airplane probably has some downthrust too soy ou should line up the engine mount with the top line so the tip of the engine shaft will line up with the lower one ( that's a guess only...). As for seeling the lines, well you should seal all the engine area with epoxy or resin to protect it from fuel.
I hope that will help

Ok, that's the opposite of what someone else told me. The consensus is that I need to line up the engine on one set of lines and point the tip at the other set of lines. The question is which set? So far, I think I am going to line up (from behind) up and left and then point down and right using washers. That will give me right and down thrust. But, I don't know if the firewall has been compensated already for right and down, it doesn't look like it.

With a picture of the firewall, it would be easier...

The way you are describing how you will assemble it sound ok but you should not need to add washers.

Then how do I get the engine to be offset? The kit provides washers and instructions to do this, just not which way to point it.

If the intructions are calling for some washers, well just do as you are describing in your previous post. From behind, the engine should point to the right and down.
