zelmoman -> Carbon fiber rod for wing joiner (7/26/2007 3:54:55 PM)

Greetings!

I'm converting a Great Planes Spirit Elite ARF to electric launch instead of using a winch or hi-start. This will add some weight overall, so I'd like to re-engineer some things to reduce the overall weight as much as possible without compromising anything.

Currently, the wing joiner is a stainless steel rod, 7 mm in diameter, and about 12" long. It weighs 3.6 oz!

Two questions:

1. Would a carbon fiber rod or tube of the same size be suitable for this purpose, or even a carbon rod of smaller diameter?
2. If so, where can I find suitable carbon rod stock? I've searched internet hobby distributors, and the internet at large, and cannot find ANY 7mm stock.

Thanks,

-doug-
