Hi all,

I am interested in purchasing some kind of gas powered buggy. I don't plan to race. I just want one for fun but I'd like it to be pretty good. I was looking at this one here: http://www.nitrorcx.com/ba18se.html If any of you know what you're doing and would care to comment on that car I'd love to hear what you have to say. A couple questions I have so far: 1. What's the difference between those two cars? and 2. What's with the price drop? That seems like a huge discount and I guess I'm a little suspicious of that. However, the price is right around what I'm looking to spend and if any of you have objections to that car maybe you could suggest something else?

I appreciate the help...

There is no difference between the two buggies, just the shell. The big PRICE DROP is just what others in the 1/8 scale cost. Exceed is the same as redcat, the difference being the size of the motors exceed is using the .21 while redcat as an example will use the .28 check it out http://allaboutfunhobbies.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=2_48_69&products_id=75 You can also check out www.redcatracing.com for more info. As well as http://www.exceedrc.com/ hope this helps.

May I sugest that if you are just looking for something fun to play with, maybe you might want to look at a 1/10th scale buggy. They are cheaper but a little smaller than the 1/8th scale. I have a 1/10th scale buggy and it is plenty fast enough. I believe this is the redcat version, http://allaboutfunhobbies.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=2_20_67&products_id=704 . Exceed also has a version of this car, http://www.raidentech.com/exrcxtfigr24.html . The only thing I see different between the two is that the Exceed car has a 2 speed transmision and the Redcat only has one speed. I have dealt with both the sites I have links to and I can tell you from experience that the customer service for AllAboutFunHobbies.com is much better than that of Raidentech.com. Shipping is normally cheaper for me through all about fun hobbies as well. HardBall seems to know more about these cars than I do so maybe he will jump back on here to give you more details about the smaller cars.

Your correct toydestroyer, but the redcat product also has the two speed in the 1/10 scale(tornado BB) The price of the 1/8 exceed is very good. It looks like a nice entry level vehicle with some nice features. The best feature is the price 239 for the buggy is cheap. I would go with the bigger buggy just my opinion. You know what they say, bigger is better

Thanks for the responses--all of the sites you guys suggested were interesting to look at.

When I first got into R/C cars in high school, I found that building the car was almost as much fun as driving the car. I had purchased some $100.00 electric car (can't remember the brand) and I also bought my buddy's old r/c car from him (his was much higher end than mine). Anyway, by coincidence the pieces of the two cars were compatable and I took them both apart and rebuilt one car that was pretty good...it impressed the guy at the local hobby shop. Anyway, I was frustrated with the electric cars. The battery always seemed to offer 5 minutes of good performance and then another 5 minutes of less-than-good performace. I always figured that if I bought another R/C car I would get a gas powered one to eliminate this. So when I started looking around this time I was looking for a kit because I would like to build it myself but there seems to have been a move toward RTR cars these days. The kits I was able to find were expensive by themselves and didn't include engines or radio equipment. :/ I find that a little discouraging.

Where do you guys stand on a KIT vs. an RTR car? Do you know of any kits that do come with all I would need (i.e. engine and radio) for a decent price if I wanted to go that route? Thanks for the help.

And yes, I am currently in a state of flux around the size of the buggy I'll end up with. I think the 1/10th is more what I'm looking for but that 1/8th Exceed seemed like a good enough deal to maybe go that way. Anyway, I'll be poking around here and there and probably asking more questions...thanks again to both of you.

Kit cars are usually very high dollar, they come dissasembled and it's typically only a rolling chassis with no wheels electronics, engine or body. To complete an entire kit your looking in the neighborhood of $500 to $600, RTR is the best bang for the buck for a beginner to the nitro hobby, typically the parts don't cost quite as much to replace when they break and they are far less complicated to work on. Also Redcat Racing has a $99 1/10th scale single speed Nitro buggy, the only thing I suggest you buy is a starter kit of some sort. We have a starter kit http://allaboutfunhobbies.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23_17_29&products_id=216 that we put together that comes with everything your going to need to start out in the nitro hobby for a decent price.

I am kinda new as well but I don't think i would get the $99 1/10 because the engine is .16 not .18. Its almost the engine dif. between a 1/10 and a 1/8. I like the 1/8 u picked at first but I would pick the exceed xtreme. I like mine . Im not saying the $99 dollar one is bad. I like it but I personally think its to small. If u like it tho knock yourself out. Remember its not wat everyone else thinks is the best it is your personal opinion.

A .16 and .18 are so close to the same performance that you can hardly tell the difference, BUT if you get the 1/10th $99 buggy from Redcat it comes with a life time engine exchange warrenty that means if anything goes wrong with the engine for the life of car you send in half the cost of a new engine plus the old one and they send you brand new engine, you can also use this warrenty to upgrade the engine to say a vx3.0 or team infinity 3.0. Very good deal.
